There is a discussion on Hacker News, but feel free to comment here as well.
If this tech works for speed limit offenders, then I can see it eventually being integrated into all vehicles, which I’m not a fan of. You can’t say that a speed limit must be adhered to in absolutely every situation. Most? Sure, but not all.
If it works the roads will be safer. This is the same slippery slope argument that keeps gun registration from happening.
No, that’s being caused by people that believe in “shall not be infringed”, e.g., civil liberties. From what you’re responding to, it’s clear that your intent behind gun registration is the removal of civil liberties.
Perhaps the left would be better served by following through on their own social policies, such as actually changing zoning laws in Democratic supermajority areas so that low-cost and mixed income housing can be built to make housing more affordable, and reforming school funding so that wealthy districts don’t get the meat while poor districts are left with the bare bones. Maybe they could even institute wealth taxes and significant criminal justice reform. But so far NYS, CA, MA, IL, and other states haven’t actually put the effort into anything that would reduce the social ills that fuel crime. I don’t expect Republicans to do so, but at least they aren’t hypocritical about not giving a shit about anyone except the wealthy.
But! How will state troopers meet quota?
