  • They were burning money to gain market share and now they’re jacking up the price? Shocking, I say, truly shocking.

Is what I would’ve said if I didn’t read the article, but it addresses that pretty well. The jist is VC went in with expectations of greatly decreasing costs, which is happening with older models, but nobody wants to use older models.

So, costs are actually going up, and the bubble will keep swelling, I guess.

  • From the readme of the branched project:

This is an independent project, not at all affiliated with BigTech or any of their subsidiaries or tax evasion tools, nor any political activists groups, state actors, etc. It’s explicitly free of any “DEI” or similar discriminatory policies. Anybody who’s treating others nicely is welcomed.

While I’m personally generally pro DEI, especially in state institutions and for profit business, anyone who’s been following OSS for the last several years can see how it’s been a double edged sword that’s been abused negatively by corporate entities that stand to profit from engaging as a bad actor.

So while a “DEI free” disclaimer is certainly a red flag, it might be worth abstention of judgement.

  • Y’know, while I also think it’s exaggerated, there’s definitely some truth to it. I was playing it on my phone while my friend’s kids were watching, and they incessantly tried to get me to pick opening packs over any other game mechanic.

I think it definitely does abuse that “loot box opening” dopamine pathway a little too well in a perhaps a less than healthy sort of way, even if it doesn’t cost you any real money.

So while it is a very good deck building strategy game, I totally get the reason it has the reputation it does.
