Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why are there so many people on youtube cheering on Trump's national garde and denouncing the protesters, but so few showing up on his military parade?

4·9 months agoBoyle uses low budget guerilla film techniques for feature films sometimes. 28 Days was the first feature shot on consumer tape cameras, Canon X1 I think, and they compensated by using a lot of them at once.
Most expensive scene was an empty bridge in London at 5:30AM, IIRC, and they only had a few minutes to pull it off. Lots of cheap cameras gives you options, if you can work with resolution and lens and colourspace issues.

Science@mander.xyz•Chimpanzees use medicinal leaves to perform first aid
2·9 months agoMy roommate in university was studying a group of chimps in Tanzania who ate small quantities of a plant periodically that happened to be a potent dewormer. Apparently it didn’t taste very good, and they were botanists not ethologists, so didn’t verify how they know, just that it was very deliberate, socially reinforced, and it worked. (Late 1980’s study!)
how would you know which places to patrol, and when?
This is an extremely regional problem to solve. Where I am, which is a village and exurban-ruural, you would go to the electronics recycling depot and see if they have any choice items. Also you could call the various independent pc repair people to see if they have anything no longer supported but functional for free or cheap.
Also there’s various thrift stores that sometimes have computers cheap.
The closest big city is Vancouver so to curb cruise there I would pick upper middle class neighbourhoods with alleyways, and drive around on garbage collection days. I wouldn’t really dumpster dive unless I knew of a likely source from hearsay.
I have a bunch of old macs here with different distros onthem, mostly Mint, that I have been trying to give away to locals (without being obligated to provide support, which is the stickler apparently). They all run great. One could dumpster dive or curb cruise, or around here, lurk at Recycling.

[Migrated, see pinned post] Casual Conversation @lemm.ee•What tv streaming platforms are you on?English
4·10 months agoRegion is Canada. TV is connected to an AppleTV and a media server. Forced to use mostly apple stuff for various reasons.
Free and generally ad-free Apps:
- CBC Gem (free tier but login)
- DW (news/docs)
- France 24
- Al Jazeera
- Kanopy (via library card, all good movies)
- NFB for the best shorts
- Knowledge Network (free in BC)
- Local news channel apps
For self hosted media files I access a SMB share with the Infuse app for a full video player experience. It’s the only subscription I pay for an app, worth it.
Left Netflix last year. Left Prime this year. It’s all shit sandwiches over there.

cybersecurity@infosec.pub•What are You Working on Wednesday
2·10 months agoWell it is a matrix synapse server that runs the element web app, and I will make sure everyone also uses the element device apps as well, mainly for consistency.
So you have been using Matrix! Element is just a matrix front-end.
Most of our team is nontechnical so Element.app seems like a good skype replacement from an interface point of view. We also tried Zulip, rocket.chat, and Discord. Zulip was the second choice. I just have to ensure they don’t wander off into federated servers by accident, or invite anyone else.

cybersecurity@infosec.pub•What are You Working on Wednesday
2·10 months agoI work with a small manufacturer team scattered around the world, and Skype has been the glue since it was released.
Now Skype is dead (in a month) and I have the opportunity to move things in a secure and non-American direction, so I will try and introduce team members to our shiny new matrix homeserver hosted in Europe.
I’ll be locking it down without defederating, as it’s a teamchat only server. Any advice?

Canada@lemmy.ca•The Conservatives Keep Acting Like Authoritarians5·11 months agoWell yes, but it’s a big spectrum right? Most workplaces are authoritarian so we have habituated. A shitty boss who schedules you badly is not a slave owner. The cons are pro-oligarch, believing that merit is demonstrated by wealth and sometimes breeding. All the parties accept a monarchy even a bit, sorry Bloc, and have a traditional leadership structure so some authoritarian tendencies are everywhere.
Conservative parties throughout history have trended toward either aristocratic stratification and sometimes despotic populism. It’s not even close, and disingenuous to both-sides it. Tankies would be the closest comparison.

I thought so too but remembered yesterday I was working at an office they were putting back together after remodeling, and noticed they were playing music off an iPhone and it was surprisingly loud.
