You’re missing the point, and I can’t tell if it’s willfull or incidental, but everyone is saying it has become something we only do a few times a year, as opposed to regularly, because of the expense.

I get you’re being over the top to make a point, but it seems a bit ridiculous to compare overpriced popcorn to a first class plane ticket and staying at an expensive hotel. We’re talking about experiences that people used to indulge in on a whim, or which were reasonably affordable for average folks. That is not the case with the examples you provided, and those kind of purchases are large even for some people of means.

You’re not wrong, but you’re also ignoring the fact that the whole point of a movie theater is to have an “experience” and the snacks are part of it. Sure, you don’t have to get it, yes your strategy can be done and will work, and I have a long and storied history of stopping by the candy aisle in the grocery store before noisily making my way to my seat and enjoying my discount goodies. But buying a ticket to a theater is a matter of spectacle and experience, and that exact experience is becoming rapidly unaffordable even when you just buy the tickets alone anymore.

It’s less complicated than even that, it’s about real estate value, which is where McDonald’s corporate arm really makes it’s money. It’s easier to sell a full gray box than one that is so obviously a McDonalds in a past life. Same thing has happened with Pizza Hut, they don’t build them with the classic roofline anymore.

That’s the thing about abusive relationships, when you’re in them long enough you’re often manipulated to the point where the abuser makes you think your actions are the problem. Making me question reality, and myself was her modus operandi. Looking back yeah, there were plenty of red flags, but I also had such a low opinion of myself I accepted the kind of relationship I felt I deserved, until she pushed me past my breaking point. Having a kid also complicated matters; seemed like that was a major turning point in her narcissistic abusive descent. Then you sprinkle on a little sunk cost fallacy and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.

I’ll spare the details and just give you the highlights:

• She put me through years of domestic abuse, gaslighting and manipulation
• She had zero regard for our family’s financial future and nearly pushed us to the brink of bankruptcy
• She walked out on me and our son to become a literal crack whore

Heed my words, dudes: if you must have a joint checking account, have your direct deposit go to an account only in your name. I didn’t and she cleaned me out to buy crack.

I largely have as well, but I fucking hate that forced ignorance is my only path to mental and emotional regulation.
