Don’t forget the Napster-version of a Madonna-track, where after some time she stopped singing and started scolding the listener: “What the fuck do you think you are doing, stealing my music?!” or something like that. It was pretty wild in the Old Net.
I was a huge Windows-fanboy for +20 years. Then I slowly started getting familiar with Linux Mint. Since a couple of years we have no more Windows in our house.
I used to fix computer problems for people a lot, for fun. Last week, I booted a Windows 11 laptop to help a friend and I was put off by EVERYTHING. The nagging popups, ads, the dubious ad-riddled webpages I have to visit to download apps. It’s all crazy evil. And still people bullshit-bingo me that “Linux is so complicated, you need to learn so much” while constantly fighting off predatory shit from soulless corporations. They don’t even know what using a computer that works for you means anymore.

Linux@lemmy.ml•About to throw my first install party, any tips?
14·1 year agoI’ll have my first Install Party next week. I will install Linux Mint because it is easy and well documented. I’ll bring a laptop with a clean install. So I can teach some basics while the installations are running.

I just installed DietPi on my new ThinClient. I use it on Raspberry Pi for years and I really like it. Is super lightweight and comes with lots of preconfigured software.
Ploopy fills my hand really well

Linux@lemmy.ml•Researching making the switch from Windows on my main PC and I have questions.
2·1 year ago2: I’m a Bitwig fan-boy. Buy this great piece of software, have tons of fun and never use third party VSTs again. Sound design, modulate everything, wow! You can run many Windows VSTs using yabridge. Reaper might be a good choice for a DAW as well, it’s a little more classic and has plugins and scripts for everything.

I would love this to become a thing. Like a race to the bottom, how much information can you cramp into 2 watts and make it as stylish as possible. Take pride in a minimalist webpage.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Music Production and Software Synthesizers/VST's under Linux
2·1 year agoI use it since v2 and became an instant fanboy. Back then there was only the full version. I probably don’t use all the features all the time, but it’s so much fun to play around, discover sounds, modulate stuff, chain up effects and build little machines. It’s such an advanced piece of software, compared to any other DAW. So if you can spare the 300 bucks, then go for the full version! It’s definitely worth it and on summer sale right now.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Music Production and Software Synthesizers/VST's under Linux
8·1 year agoI had many VSTs on Windows. After making the switch to Linux, ported them using Yabridge. But I kept using them less and less. Now I’m on Bigwig and I hardly use any third party VSTs at all. Hell, I don’t even use 99% of my samples because Bitwig is so versatile. I usually take their native stuff and tweak it to my likings, and fast! So even if that is not what you asked, I recommend leaving it all behind and start fresh with just Bitwig. It really doesn’t need anything else to make music on Linux. And it feels great to let go of all the digital baggage.
This was decades ago. There was a Reggae Revival in the 2010ths, lots of great artists which stopped promoting homophobia, sexism, greed and violence. The US were super homophobic a couple of decades ago as well. So let’s not judge this island too hard, it comes from a rough past, change needs time.
It’s a likkle more than that

I have 1/3 of a 1 TB SSD for Windows, Linux and a free partition for random stuff each. With home finally on a second 2 TB SSD. This is great, so far.

I used to install low latency kernel as well. Last time I just installed vanilla Mint. Audio was bad. Then I figured out I have to add myself to the audio group and voilà, works perfectly. No more kernel-hopping for me.
