Cute rhetoric. The dichotomy isn’t, “ask people what they think vs tell people what to think.” The dichotomy is, “subjective vs objective.” You could be taking objective measurements. What you are measuring is not what you are claiming. These charts only allow you to talk about people’s perceptions (as it clearly says on the infographic) and not the underlying realities. Your implicit point has to be that believing you have equal right is just as good as actually HAVING them.

That isn’t an objective measure. You’re not examining characteristics of governance, you are examining public views on governance. In the 80s Canada had an image problem domestically and internationally. Did Canada change? Hell no! We engaged one of the most successful PR campaigns in modern history, and suddenly we’re all stroking each other off and receiving international plaudits, even while we continue to burn our children’s future for fuel.

I would recommend reading The Hobbit! It is structured to be very accessible, without all the grinding through pages of descriptive prose like in the rest of Tolkien’s works. I think The Hobbit is his best book by far, and it’s certainly his most readable book for people who are not yet strong readers. It’s intended to be accessible to children, but I certainly would not call it a children’s book. It’s quite sophisticated if you want to look for depth but it’s very interesting and exciting on the surface level as well.

Right now I am reading Peter Pan to my partner. I’ve never read it before and it’s delightful so far.

It also kept tigers away for six years! Personal anecdotes are not meaningful when it comes to something like medical efficacy.

See, the simple fact that you’re telling me those things when clearly I don’t give a single fuck tends to suggest the contrary, but of course it’s not conclusive and again, I don’t give enough fucks to actually find out.

I don’t know anything about you or these pills but typically one would tell a “lie” like that as part of their overall campaign to cope. The point isn’t to deceive others but to bulwark a worldview that emotionally benefits the person to hold in some way (ie, “I was smart to take these pills, wasn’t taken advantage of at all”)
