I’ve had feds, with the s explicitly, refer to the whole federal govt more than I’ve heard The Federal ever refer to anything other than The Federal Reserve.

If I made that error and someone pointed it out I would think a simple ‘crap, thanks’ followed by an edit would be appropriate.
