Written in response to the social and political unrest in Jamaica, “Get Up, Stand Up” is a call to stand up for the voiceless and all those denied basic human rights. Its impact has endured long past its origins to the point that it was adopted by the human-rights nonprofit Amnesty International as its official anthem.

The song was penned during the 1970’s going into the 80’s. This was during the time the island plunged into civil war. He was speaking to the mass; mostly poor citizens that weren’t standing up for their rights and were being used by politicians. There were churches popping up selling god to folks. He was attempting assure people that life is on Earth. Don’t wait until you die, which is the Christian belief that the church sells to profit and comfort off the poor. The isms and skisims is the lies politicians sells to the mass to get their votes. only to throw them a bone which they kill each other for. Meaning that garrison war is what comes when they fight for the scraps.
