I want to build a fat unraid server for photo storage, NAS, probably a few large docker containers (I want to mess with self-hosting one or multiple smallish LLMs, probably have a plex server, and get started with *arr)
BUT
I don’t want to spend a huge amount of time or effort figuring out the hardware stuff, I’m not good at hardware, and honestly don’t want to spend much time learning it right now and was hoping y’all could help me out.
I was going to just grab a decent looking build from PCPartPicker like such:
https://pcpartpicker.com/b/jFHzK8
and go with it but I figured maybe someone here will take pity on me and help me out. Please?
Im no expert, but I think you should go with less powerfull PSU. Its bad efficiency if you use only 5% of power. CPU is also probably overkill. Im running my server on G3930 and doesnt look like I have performance issues. But Im new to this, just my 0.02
Ah ignore me sorry.I missed LLM part lol
No problem! I appreciate the input even if you change your mind! 🙂
I’m running a couple dozen docker containers on unraid and I only have one NVME cache disk, it’s 256 GB. I have only have 76 GB filled on my cache disk, the majority being attributed to Plex with things like movie trailers, temporary storage for torrenting, etc.
Just wanted to give you a heads up that 1 TB and a 2 TB NVME drives may be a bit overkill unlesa you’re trying to host a lot of VM’s
That’s very h elpful, thank you. Waking up and looking again - I feel like I’m out of my mind with how much space it has, and the cost. hahaha.
Thats a lot of money. I just bought a HP elitedesk g3 800 midtower for €82, incl psu but without cpu, from a local refurb site. Slightly dented but bios updated to this years version and cleaned… From ebay a €45 i5-7400 for 4c/4t as it can decode hevc 10bit for jellyfin. 32gig ram from ebay. 4 amazon SSDs I mounted in an icydock chassis that slots into the 5.25 bay. This is the expensive part, but its really clean and drives are ejectable like a rackserver. The chassis can hold 2 HDD for an additional zpool as well as an extra ssd. Also has an nvme slot for Proxmox OS and plenty of usb for Truenas style setups.
For €82 there is a lot of value in that chassis.
Could you buy a used corporate SFF off of ebay instead of building a new rig? Maybe an optiplex, Dell 12-core, Thinkcenter, or some sort of multi-core mini micro? You could even buy 4-cores but cluster 3 of them together to make 12. That’s Docker’s best use case, mobilizing your VMs across a cluster of machines. I’m not sure what you need but this is a lot of power and cost. You could start really really small with an Unraid and Plex server to dip your toes in, and then you’d have an idea about hardware and expanding your power incrimentally.
Yeah I thought I deleted this later that day because it was criminally expensive and I don’t know what my just waking up brain was thinking… It was definitely stupid amount of money being thrown at a problem I even didn’t quite have. Thanks for your response!
