EDIT: We’re going to attempt to organize a larger logo and spread the word further around various Fediverse services. I get that a lot of y’all are opposed to visiting over there. I’m pissed too, which is why I spent a lot of my day helping write “Fuck Spez.” I don’t think we’re going to contribute to Reddit’s revenue much, and I think at the very least sending a VERY public message that the Fediverse is here is a good thing.
How about not promoting reddit traffic
Came to say the same. Why are you driving users to their platform at all?
I guess Reddit knew people wouldn’t be able to resist, doing nothing seems like the obvious move.
This is the way.
It’s not about the money. It’s about sending a message.
But this doesn’t. It’s not like people can google a pixelated logo that small and find their way here.
I agree, the logo on its own needs to either be larger, or needs to have some sort of additional context included. But all of that takes a lot of coordination to do.
Just let it go. No reason to go back there any more.
I fully support this action, having been a cheerleader for it in a previous thread. For those saying this is driving traffic to Reddit, I’d like to repeat the counterpoint that:
I agree with you in principle, but speaking from strictly a strategic perspective, /r/place presents a vulnerability that can be exploited without contributing what Reddit really needs to regain its status - content.
In the context of a social media war, this means we can use the space to peel off users who wouldn’t have been introduced to the Fediverse otherwise, with no risk of harming ourselves or providing Reddit more than a temporary moment of attention. There’s been a concerted effort to remove links to Fediverse resources in many subs, and for a great deal of redditors, they’re in the dark about what the Fediverse represents and how much better it is than Reddit.
Plus it’s just cool to fuck with Spez, and the Fediverse is so cool in general that I’d love to see what the effect would be if we united against a common enemy.
I can guarantee you that there is not a single person who would look at this symbol and know that it is the federverse symbol, the let alone whatever the hell a Lemmy is without having already known exactly those things.
This is a vanity project, nothing more nothing less.
I agree with you on this point - there could have been more effective messaging, but I’ll take what I can get - it’s a significant step up from “fuck Spez”.
In my original post I suggested the more recognizable and iconic Lemmy and Mastodon logos as they have wider recognition than the concept of the Fediverse, and would draw people to specific instances as well as making a statement.
This is a vanity project, nothing more nothing less.
Yeah, but lets be honest now - 95% of social media falls under that classification. The 5% that isn’t is mostly found here, so I view this particular vanity project as a mission of mercy for those who are unaware of the excellence of the alternative in the Fediverse.
Rainbow pixels won’t convince anyone to switch over at this point, man. Bad engagement is still engagement to Spez, hence the continued presence of ‘fuck u/spez’ all over the canvas. If he genuinely cared, he would have ordered the admins to brush over everything with skittles like they already did with the Snoo guillotine.
What are you talking about? Strategic perspective, vulnerabilities and exploits? Social media wars?
You’re discussing playing a meaningless game of placing colored pixels organized by Reddit. They’re the ones ‘exploiting’ your ‘vulnerability’ because they will sell your engagement. No doubt.
Go read my original shitpost to get the context. It’s an analogy.
Here is an alternative Piped link(s): https://piped.video/watch?v=aTT9ALyq3bI

I’m open-source, check me out at GitHub.
If you are gonna write something, write fuck spez
I really feel like it needs to be slightly higher res. Even as somebody who has seen the Fediverse logo hundreds of times by now, it’s barely recognizable.
I agree, if you’re going to do it, it needs to be 3-4 times that size at least
Then consider this a proof of concept. Let’s see if we can even get a little one in
Fair. It’s the best I could mock up in 5 minutes. Bigger means it would need more hands/accounts to make it and keep it up.
