I can finally use my favorite ****it app to browse lemmy!!
After the astronomical pricing debacle with Sync for Lemmy… I instantly bought Boost ad free! Thanks @rmayayo@lemmy.world <3 Loved Boost for Reddit and I’m excited to keep using your app for Lemmy!
Sync is out of their fucking mind with pricing. They were my preferred reddit app, but not for Lemmy
Oh BEYOND out of their minds. Sync is certainly a great app. But like, I can buy a game for what they wanted. I was a Boost user on Reddit, had that labour of love feel to it.
It wasn’t a labor of love if he was charging for it, it just had a “small time dev” feel. A dev that just happens to have a fanclub encouraging every single decision he makes, no matter how dumb.
Let’s also not forget he tried to make it a subscription at release, only to quickly walk that back once people got pissed. He claims it was always the plan to have a one time charge, but seeing as how he wants as able to add it within 24 hours, there’s no real reason why it couldn’t have been there at release date except that he didn’t want it to be.
I’m really glad to hear I’m not the only one who balked on seeing the price. Off to Boost it is then!
EDIT: Editing this comment from Boost. Already prefer it to Sync. Can’t get my head around their pricing at all…
I think it makes total sense, to be honest. The Lemmy audience is a fraction of the Reddit audience and a significantly larger part of Lemmy users is into the whole “free, open source everything” mindset (which isn’t bad, they’re just not likely to be customers!). That means cost/paying user becomes a lot higher than what it used to be on Reddit. Cost in general is higher as well, because there are tons of servers with different versions and different versions of pict-rs, as well as different types of proxies and load balancers that should never affect an app, but tend to anyway.
€16,49 for an ad-free app is steep, I agree on that. I very much doubt that the average Lemmy user will ever collect that amount of money in the ad-supported version. However, ljdawson isn’t stupid, he chose this price for a reason. I’m guessing he picked a price level assuming very few Lemmy users would be willing to pay at all, so he may as well compensate that by raising the price for the people who don’t really care.
As Lemmy scales up they will be left in the dust as people migrate from reddit to Lemmy and get sticker shock, and nope right out of the app. Sync devs killing their market as a result.
As if one Reddit app that stopped working months ago is going to change anything about Lemmy. I think Sync brought more ex-Sync users over to Lemmy than the price or ads will ever cost users.
People are going to nope out because they look up “Lemmy” in their respective app stores and don’t see a normal app, like Twitter or Facebook. Mastodon put out an official fork of one of their clients because people got confused about what app to download to access it.
Yeah, it’s too expensive for me, but I’m using a VPN with an ad block, so I don’t see ads anyway 🤷♂️
I paid $1 for Reddit Sync Pro and used it for hours a day for 13 years. In that time the developer provided dozens of updates, multiple major overhauls, and continual usage of functionality that requires the developer to pay ongoing API fees to provide.
Sync for Lemmy pricing is exactly as much as it should be.
They also abandoned it for a huge chunk of time
Yeah that’s what happens when you receive abuse from the community over a new version of the app that you built for free
What are you talking ‘built for free?’ A LOT of us paid for that abandoned app. If memory serves they charged for premium again after they redesigned it?
Nope, I purchased “Reddit Sync” years before the redesign (which was not actually the first redesign) and the author did not introduce any new fees or make the improved interface a separate app that required purchasing or anything. Every once in a while major updates would come out at no additional cost. When the biggest update hit a small vocal subset of the community got upset because some people can’t stand change and harassed lj. Sync is only even the price it is because when the original ~$5 ad removal fee was floated on discord during the lemmy rewrite the community voiced that they would be willing to pay more since many of us felt we got more than we paid for out of the reddit version.
$29 CAD to remove ads in Sync, while Boost is $4.39 CAD.
I’d rather pay $4.39 and donate when I can. Overall Boost will end up getting more money from me in the end. It’s hard to justify nearly $30 on a platform that may not survive, but easier to justify less than $5 with frequent donations.
I’ve legit already “boosted the rocket” in Boost for Lemmy. My issue with Sync was the fucking audacity to ask for 30$. My google opinion rewards will slowly funnel their way into rocket fuel out of mere respect for him being humble.
That’s what I did, I have no issue supporting devs. I had premium on Sync, Boost, and Relay for reddit, and often bounced between them. But Boost is the only option for Lemmy that’s worth supporting right now
Lemmy is fairly shit, but I spend a lot of time here nonetheless. I’ve probably got more than 30 euro worth of value from it. But, that said I cant bring myself to pay that kind of money for an app.
Again the other other side of that is subscription fees but we all hate them so I think the pricing is justifiable but not for me personally
Ive been using sync since it came out, havent paid any money and still havent seen any ads. Maybe mines bugged but im just gonna roll with it.
Sorry I’m out of the loop, but just searched it. Looks like Sync is $2/month or $17/year, is that the pricing people were upset about or? Because that hardly seems like anything to bulk at, but I don’t know the whole situation either.
People were far more upset at the one time fee to remove ads being 30$. The monthly subscriptions include extra features. I used sync with an adblock so I never saw the ads anyway. I wouldn’t have seen them on boost either but it’s the principle behind it.
I prefer open-source apps (very happy currently with Voyager, see !voyagerapp@lemmy.world), but huge respect for the fair pricing!
Voyager is the app I chose after trying jerboa and a couple other, I think it will grow up as a fierce competitor to apps like Boost
I am loving Voyager app too much. Not going back…
I waited for Boost. But now I am so used to and satisfied with Voyager, that I don’t know if I will change.
I am on Lemmy for the first time today because of it!
Welcome!!
Counter-Strike 2 and Boost for Lemmy releasing at the same time. Let’s go! 😁
Using it right now. Really like it.
Proprietary and actually read the privacy policy, it’s really unsettling
Yeah, I’m okay with my Voyager.
It’s 2023, we shouldn’t promote proprietary apps that adds tracking and ads
Seems like a pretty standard privacy policy, almost identical to Sync, Relay, etc. Of course not everyone wants that, but I don’t see how it’s “really unsettling”
That’s a concerning thought
Super excited! I had signed up in advance and saw it on my home screen today.
Great app.
Nice. Instantly bought the adfree version.
Same!
I forgot to mention the post was submitted using Boost already!
The more the merrier! ☺️
The moment I finally started using lemmy for good.
It’s pretty awesome.
This makes me sad. I’m loving it so much, I can’t give feedback to the developer.
Boost was my app of choice for reddit. Being able to just import all my settings directly from old app makes it feel as if I never truly left
You just opened a new world
A new fantastic point of view
