Corporate greed has filtered down into a very concentrated form and the rampant censorship (or censureship if you’re going to be technical, but at this point US gov’t also has a hand in it) creates a garish caricature.

I haven’t been “on” Reddit in a very long time (just found out I was permabanned for using a scrambling tool months ago though lolol), so I don’t know how long pro-Lemmy/fediverse posts would stay up but it’s definitely worth a shot. I’m sure we’re due for another exodus anyway.

Echoing the other user; I just worked on a data recovery job with your symptoms near identical. Back up your important files while you still have them and get new ones ASAP; preferably some form of SSD.

I find it helpful to try to quantify the time I’ll enjoy with a thing before I buy it. Or maybe there will be some amount of cost savings if it’s a tool.

This is how I finally let myself buy video games I’ve wanted for years. I find the average playtime, divide the cost by that and look at the “per hour” price rather than the whole price. Bonus points if it’s on sale or second-hand.

I usually exceed said playtime since I’m a slow gamer but it’s still a good way to return the value of joy to our limited time on earth.

If youtube stayed as it was in its first ~4 years it wouldn’t be so bad. Everything being video has ruined the internet for me, though, since I agree with you that it’s generally a bad format for information + discussion.

There used to be readable how-tos and tutorials for things, and now all that’s left is 45 minute YT videos littered with influencer garbage.

The thing about Lemmy is there are different instances/(websites), each with different rules. I think there’s an ask community on .world as well if you’re not comfortable with this one.

All websites open to the clearnet are potentially vulnerable to DDoS and other attacks, that’s just part of being on the network and cybersecurity is a thing for a reason. Likewise you can get a sunburn or rained on when you go outside, which is why we have sunscreen and umbrellas.

I’ve been dealing with stress from living in this seemingly uncaring, all-seeing world too, if it helps you feel less alone. Best we can do is be there for each other as humans when we can in the meantime.
