Privacy@lemmy.ml•Please, Kill Emails (and Phone Numbers)
5·10 months agoHere are some good resources to compare different messaging apps:
In general, my pick would be SimpleX Chat, since it too is decentralized, but also provides things that Delta Chat does not, such as post-quantum encryption.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Please, Kill Emails (and Phone Numbers)
11·10 months agoWhat you’re describing is somewhat the basis behind passkey authentication and how services like SimpleX Chat or Session operate. One day (I hope) this will become the standard.

closed source
Bluesky is open source.
I don’t know why it’s being discussed here
It is being discussed to see if things have changed.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Samsung → iPhone: Need Your De-Google Tips
1·11 months agoLibreTube uses the Material Design 3 design language, which, in my opinion, looks much nicer, more user friendly, and more responsive. NewPipe (and its forks) don’t even use the proper system calls for Picture In Picture.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Samsung → iPhone: Need Your De-Google Tips
202·11 months agoI would consider GrapheneOS instead of iOS. GrapheneOS provides full compatibility with Android without Google, and you can optionally install Google Play Services. Apple is as bad as Google in some aspects.
As for your main questions, these are my suggestions:
- Email: Proton Mail or Tuta Mail
- Search Engine: DuckDuckGo or Mullvad Leta for search engines, or SearXNG for a metasearch engine
- Browser: GrapheneOS’s Vanadium browser
- YouTube: LibreTube for mobile or FreeTube for desktop
- Cloud Storage: There are many options, but a familiar option for you would be Proton Drive
- Photos: Aves Gallery or Gallery, with network permissions disabled
Most of these are Android-only, because iOS is still privacy invasive by nature. More software can be found on my list of software.
Cheers!

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Open source real time voice changer app for making phone call
20·11 months agoLet’s not forget: privacy is not a sign of wrongdoing.
Some friends wanted to make a podcast, and asked me to join. I agreed under the condition that I could use a real-time voice changer, because I didn’t want my real voice publicly on the internet. That’s one legitimate use case. Maybe OP is calling a support number, which often monitor and record your calls. OP could also just be calling a friend, you never know who could be listening in.
In any case, voice changers are just software. It’s not creepy unless you know for sure it’s being used for something creepy. Anything can be used for good or bad.
As I mentioned in the post, the icon was created by Gordon Dylan Johnson. The way I interpret it is that the eye represents surveillance, and you are holding up your hand, which is the body language for “stop.”
That would be great, thank you! I have a hunch I’m not the only one with WebGL disabled.
Looks amazing :)
Thank you!
here’s how it is when flying
Is there a version that doesn’t use WebGL?
I received a single flash drive for my birthday one year. That flash drive unlocked the world of Linux to me, and kicked my privacy journey in motion. I’ve come so far in the years since. It truly was the best gift I ever received.

Unfortunately then the domain becomes a unique identifier. It still doesn’t fix the security issues with email itself.
You also end up giving away a lot of personal information to the domain registrar, which is less anonymous than third party email providers.
