Plus jeune je trouvais la posidonie terrifiante. Avant même d’entrer dans l’eau je préparais mon itinéraire avec circonspection, repérant les tâches sombres qui témoignaient de sa présence. À l’eau, je m’efforçais de slalomer entre elles, jamais tout à fait serein. Lorsque -toujours par accident- je me prenais à surnager un herbier, mon corps entier se tendait : un frémissement indescriptible, reptilien, se diffusait depuis la base de mon cou jusqu’à l’extrémité de mes membres (qui étaient particulièrement vulnérables, naturellement de par leur grande proximité aux fonds marins). La panique s’emparait de tout mon être et je rejoignais le rivage tapant un crawl à reléguer Manaudou au petit bassin.

Je revenais presque toujours sur mes pas armé d’un masque. Alors, posté à distance raisonnable de l’herbier, je scrutais avec fascination ses ondulations dans le courant. Le mouvement était hypnotisant, impossible à circonscrire. Les milliers de brins composant l’herbier penchaient à l’unisson de gauche à droite, puis de droite à gauche. Mes repères sous-marins, déjà fragiles, étaient impitoyablement remis en cause par ce balayage. Une foule de petites créatures nageantes pénétraient le bosquet en permanence, sans jamais qu’on les voie reparaître.
Le regard ne pouvait avoir raison de la posidonie. Personne n’eut pu dire à quelle insondable profondeur se trouvait le sol sur lequel elle était arrimée.

Entre les herbiers d’un bleu profond, il y avait du sable ou des rochers. Les rochers les plus massifs me faisaient peur eux aussi, mais moins que la posidonie. Seuls ils étaient impressionnants : géantes masses inertes se dévoilant petit à petit au travers de l’atmosphère sous-marine, abris de chimères, projeteurs d’ombres. Mais il arrivait qu’ils soient posés au milieu d’un grand herbier- alors ils devenaient salvateurs. Au prix d’une courte concession à l’horreur, ils m’accordaient leur immunité.
Perché sur mon îlot, cerné de toutes parts, je pesais mes chances de subsister sur un régime d’arapèdes et de bigorneaux. Me revenait alors en tête cette réplique de Gattaca : “Je ne pense jamais au retour”.

Hi, for what it’s worth, as someone who’s a spectator to all this, I both appreciate the technical advice that you have been giving out and thought your comments came across as somewhat condescending and irritating.

What if you keep trying your dutch, even when you’re addressed in english ?

Not indian, but I lived in Pune for a couple years and it seemed to me like a sizeable portion of the population did not speak English, in fact did not even speak Hindi but only Marathi. Anecdotal, of course, but I am not surprised that India wouldn’t be included on the map
