It was also the 90s. To anyone who didn’t live it I can not overstate how many benefits the McCallister adults had. Not even from the government just the world. The Soviet Union had just collapsed, China hadn’t risen yet and Europe had just finally recovered from WWII. America was at the end of being uncontested internationally for 50 years and had another decade to go before it all starts to crumble. Being middle class in the United States meant you had a good paying job, not the single bread winner jobs of decades before but wayyy better than what most people are offered now. It was a very different time.

  • Parts of the device you are using right now to read this were built by machines that are only produced in the EU. They are maintained by service contracts between Asian and European companies, which subjects them to tariffs. The next device you buy will probably be substantially more expensive than the previous one you bought because of that, regardless of whether or not it was made domestically. Supply chains are way too complex to say you don’t get anything from somewhere. That’s just one example.

Besides this is just Trump’s playbook. Make an maximalist threat, walk it back, claim victory. He’s in step one, by the end of June tariffs will be delayed indefinitely.

  • I’ve finally found a job that I like and the answer is with a lot of courage and a bit of privilege. First and foremost is the privilege part. If you have the privilege of being able to be unemployed for a few months and not die then you can do this, if you’re on the edge of poverty then you can’t afford to. Just another way privilege is a positive feedback cycle. Anyway, with the warning out first, then find the courage to change jobs every few years until you find a place where you say to yourself, “Yeah I can stay here for a long while.”

It’s a lot easier to do when you’re young, but if you have the privilege of being able to go through the unemployment of being between jobs then all you need to do is have the courage to leave your job and look for a better one.

  • I can’t speak for Germany but my car insurance wouldn’t cover arson. It only covers liability, so if I cause damage or personal injury with my vehicle then my insurance kicks in and covers the other person’s damages. If I wreck my car in a single vehicle collision, a tree falls on it, or someone who doesn’t have insurance hits me then I get nothing. That is collision and/or comprehensive insurance that cover those situations respectively.

However I know that if I were to lease a vehicle, I would need to get comprehensive insurance as part of the lease agreement. These were probably leased so their insurance might cover it, definitely not all of those Tesla owners though.

  • The only thing Lemmy doesn’t have that Reddit does is an enormous collection of discussions about technical solutions. I can not think of another way to look for answers to tech questions that doesn’t send me straight to SEO crap trying to sell me a solution. No I don’t want to pay for a subscription to your crappy software to make cron jobs that I’ll just have to debug anyway. I want to learn what flag I put in wrong so it’ll work in the first place.

  • Not just EVs, modern beltless CVTs and automatic transmissions make manual transmissions practically obsolete. With a wider set of gear ranges and way better performance and reliability they’re better in almost every way than a stick shift. That said, doesn’t matter how good a transmission is if it’s undersized for the engine, so I’m not say the transmission in any particular vehicle is good, just the tech has developed in recent years
