I’m even willing to bet the amount of people that set up Anubis just to get the cute splash screen isn’t insignificant.
So does apple, coconut, cracker, gin, barbarian, brownie, skinny, spade, spook, teabag and a whole host of different words.
It should never be about the word itself, but how it’s being used. Someone being called a genius doesn’t usually mean they are being applauded for their intellect either, for example.
From what I’ve read, Waymo isn’t doing too bad of a job at it. They obviously aren’t perfect, but have succeeded at being much safer than human drivers. But those cars have a bazillion different sensors bolted on them, while Tesla is trying to do the same with nothing but a few cameras and computer vision systems.
Yet it is.
You can go to a company and ask to buy their office building. Or the name trademark. Or staff. Or customer database. Or website. And you continue this until you’ve acquired literally everything the company has except the actual company itself - it’s called an “asset acquisition” - so you get all the stuff, but because the original company technically still exists it’s left with most of the liabilities.
Most, because some liabilities thankfully do transfer.
In this instance:

…how you can claim not to have gotten the contracts, yet be in a position to cancel them sound a bit of a, well, lie.
Big part of it is entirely automated - setting your username to instead of the generic “@bsky.social” to use your own domain registrar will get you a check, as that proves that e.g. the Wendys account would actually be run by Wendys.com.
The other is bluesky manually giving certain (auto-verified?) accounts the ability to verify others. The example given is New York Times being able to verify all their own journalists.
But in both cases it’s different from the way Twitter used to do it (managing a manual database of all verified accounts) or does it now (lol pay $8 for a useless checkmark)

They are simply pointing out that “racist” and “bigoted” are just as ambiguous in the exact same way as the “evil”, “harmful”, “good”, “negligent”, “bad”, “unethical” etc he mentions for the other licenses.

Ye. I have all Ikea smart stuff, by default everything is running a local mesh network with physical remotes and that light switch backup.
You don’t even need to connect any of it to the net, buying a hub to get app & google home/alexa/etc control is entirely optional with the exception of a few sensors, like the moisture/water leak one. And even then, the app & hub work on local wifi with no internet anyway.
Hope they keep those maps updated, the assist on our BMW constantly gets the speed limits wrong. There’s a section that was changed from 50km/h to 70km/h years ago and it still gets confused because the signs don’t match the map it’s using, flip flopping between the two multiple times.
But at least it’s just an option, it doesn’t restrict or automatically do anything so it’s not a huge issue.
France has a worldwide trademark on the name Champagne since 1891, and it is one of the many named protected EU wide by the “protected designation of origin” registry.
But you can find “legal” US Champagne, because “California Champagne” was a separate trademark - any US manufacturer that made it before 2005 can continue using it.

But obviously once you start getting hundreds of millions in venture capital funds, and eventually sell yourself to Paypal for 4 billion, it’s clear that isn’t all you are doing any more.
I did assume in the end that it stole all my shopping data, and probably bunch of browsing history in general, which is why I had it installed in a separate browser, but I didn’t expect it to be doing affiliate hacking and blackmailing partner deals for the coupons.
It has a mozilla telemetry component, but that doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily reporting to mozilla - which wouldn’t make much sense anyway - nor that it actually functions at all. Most telemetry components in Firefox can’t simply be deleted because it causes stuff to break, so they are replaced with stubs that don’t actually do anything.
That would require starting a database with the purpose of cataloguing every single part number in every single device that exists, which while technically possible, is rather unfeasible without extensive manufacturer cooperation.
What iFixit is doing is the other way around, they are telling what device a certain part number they carry fits in - as in their example, what Lenovo laptop that specific battery is compatible with. That’s a problem multiple orders of magnitude smaller in scope.
In a perfect world though that information would be available in the repair manual and schematic that came with your device, as they usually did a few decades back. Alas, that’s something that’s never going to happen again because it hurts profit margins.
Oh yeah, even a tiny increase in bulk price is a fantastic excuse to bump the profit margins for corporations, I’m not even pretending that wouldn’t happen in real life. Just look at the US egg prices and the massively increased profits of the companies selling them.
As for what’s the upper limit on the price increase in the long run, that’s quite hard to estimate, because the more expensive coffee becomes, the more options there will be for growing it in sub-optimal conditions. At some point, somewhere, growing coffee in a greenhouse becomes profitable to do.
Is that at $10/kg, $30/kg? $100? Over 9000? I don’t have a clue.
But for quite a lot of people the coffee they currently drink is so ridiculously overpriced that even an absolutely massive increase wouldn’t have to mean they actually need to stop drinking coffee - to make a latte at home that was expensive as the one from Starbucks, the coffee itself could cost $350/kg - 15 grams of it would be $5.25, plus the milk. It would just completely kill coffee shops as a concept.
TBH, getting banned from a sub for something that got downvoted there as well just means you said something in the wrong place to the wrong people. That exact same thing can (and does) happen in Lemmy too.

It’s simply checking if the connection is from an actual browser, as a scraper pretending to be one won’t actually refresh the page as instructed. It’s going to buy some time, but like the rest of Anubis in general, it will only work until the scrapers get modified to work around it.
