  • Before Arch that role belonged to Gentoo.

To add, before the change the Gentoo wiki was a top resource when it came to Linux questions. Even if you didn’t use Gentoo you could find detailed information on how various parts of Linux worked.

One day the Gentoo wiki died. It got temporary mirrors quickly, but it took a long time to get up and working again. This left a huge opening for another wiki, the Arch wiki, to become the new top resource.

I suspect, for a number of reasons, Arch was always going to replace Gentoo as the “True Linux Explorer”, but the wiki outage accelerated it.

  • You’re not affected if (and only if)

You always used the Brave browser or the DuckDuckGo search engine on mobile

I found that odd, but reading the more technical write up (linked in the article) it seems Brave blocks localhost communication.

The Chrome proposal references a single use case. I’ve never seen a website that sets up my local devices, but is this a new thing?

Why did localhost not get blocked earlier? This seems like a huge hole browsers have ignored for years.

Also the DuckDuckGo exception doesn’t make sense to me. Does DuckDuckGo have Facebook trackers on it to begin with? Whatever site DuckDuckGo sends you to, if they have the trackers, you’ll get tracked.

  • Linux has two ways of drawing pictures, the old way (Xorg) and the new way (Wayland).

The old way is like a giant box of crayons with the crayon sharpener built in. The box is all marked up, the sharpener is full of gunk, and a few crayons are melted together. Nobody really wants to touch the old box of crayons, although it does work for the most part, it’s a familiar box.

The new way is like a smaller box of crayons. The clean sharpener isn’t built in but it is available nearby, although some people say it doesn’t work as good. A few crayons are missing, but are available in most cases, they’re just not in the box. Most people are working to improve the new box.

If you’re using Linux, the new box of crayons is generally the better choice. It’s ok to stop using the old box.

  • Elle Fanning looks like a good choice to play a young Effie Trinket.

I haven’t read any of the books, but I’ve seen all the films to date. My view of Effie was one of someone who was a bit of a failure. I don’t think it’s her fault, although it could be, more just always on the outside of the in-group. She worked her way up but the best she could do was District 12. For her it’s everything, but to everyone else it’s a joke.

Which is to say I think she could have an interesting story, but not one that can be told the same time as Haymitch. I get more of a fan service vibe vs this is the right time to tell her story vibe.

I’m not looking for spoilers, but curious to know what others think.

  • Two days?

A friend worked at a company with a one-man IT crew aka “the friend”. Technically they worked part time, but occasionally had to come in and fix things that broke overnight. So they were “always” on call, but things mostly ran smoothly and unless it was super important it could wait until business hours/the next working day. Basically computers working was useful, but not a requirement for this company.

Anyway I was looking for a job, friend convinced the owner they needed help, so the job was mine, no interview needed.

So day one I get a look around, get a jist of how things work, get accounts setup, get HR-type stuff setup, take long business lunch and talk shop.

Day two, meet the owner and eventually the conversation turns to, “So let me know which days each of you are covering.” As in a single 30 hour per week job for one person, is now two 15 hour per week jobs for two people.

Needless to say my friend was mortified. Obviously I wasn’t going to screw them over, so I quit. I found a job shortly after that was way better and my friend got a small (although not nearly enough) pay bump. So guess it worked out.

  • Yes, when I was much younger I won 2nd place in a Diablo II fan site giveaway. You had to answer 5 difficult trivia questions about Diablo II to be entered into a drawing and my name was selected second, so second place.

Unfortunately, I never received my prize. The prize was shipped to the wrong state, they used the wrong two letter abbreviation. If I recall correctly the city & street was a valid address in the other state. I tried to contact the organizers and the post office (obviously they couldn’t help) but it never planned out.

I think my prize would have been a small Diablo figurine.

  • If you watched Sonic 1 & Sonic 2, it’s a no brainer to watch Sonic 3. I think Jim Carrey is the best part of all three films.

Additionally, the story loosely follows the 3D Sonic games storylines, so if you grew up with those games it’s fun to see them come to live action.

If you have no attachment to Sonic or his games, you’ll still enjoy some parts, like Jim Carrey, but otherwise you’ve just got to accept the premise and be fine with whatever is happening.

If your main draw is Keanu, I mean he’s in the film, but he’s a talking hedgehog so… You know… Set expectations.
