Technology@beehaw.org•Didn’t Take Long To Reveal The UK’s Online Safety Act Is Exactly The Privacy-Crushing Failure Everyone Warned About
21·7 months agoIt doesn’t matter. For this and any future government, there’s no putting the gatekeeping genie back in its bottle - it’s just too useful for them.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What brings you joy and happiness or, what are you passionate about?
3·7 months agohttps://beaks.live/ is probably the one I’m most proud of. All home built. When I retire in a few years time I’m going to see if I can make and sell a few bird boxes like that.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is something you never understood the hype for?
4·7 months agoAI is a catch all term, and I’m using it as such. I’m not saying that none of the technology has any use, but the hype saying it’s a panacea is just that - hype. The same as Blockchain, which has its uses but was hyped out of all proportion.
You are right that LLMs are particularly bad when it comes to value for energy/water/hardware etc.

4·7 months agoMaking something and it works. Bonus points if other people think it’s cool as well.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is something you never understood the hype for?
4·7 months ago1, 2, 4, power wastage, the hype, the low returns for all the time, energy, and resources spent on a technology that has its uses but is no more a panacea than bitcoin, web4 or any of the other bullshit bubbles that have been ubiquitous since people worked out that venture capitalists will spunk unlimited amounts of money at the latest shiny thing.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Lemmy, what's the meaning, or point if you prefer, of life? I know 42, but I'm serious. Nothing lasts, everything is meaningless - are we just amusing ourselves until death?
1·8 months agoYou are the best suited vessel for transferring your DNA to the next generation. That is the meaning of life in the most specific sense. More generally, humans have evolved to help others achieve this goal, in the form of generosity and autism. At the purest biological level, the meaning of life is to have children and to help others of your species survive to have children.
This does not prohibit you from finding your own personal meaning of course, and I wish you the best of luck in doing so.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Systemd's Nuts and Bolts - A Visual Guide to Systemd
20·8 months agoI started reading that because I want to learn more about systemd and ended up wanting to go back to DOS. Presumably it all makes sense, but when I tried to read it my brain stopped working and my eyes slid off the bottom of the screen.
I don’t know why but I just found it incomprehensible.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Do you use Javascript bookmarklets? Which ones do you find useful? And are there similar things that would be useful to know of?
7·8 months agoThere’s a couple there - one changes password fields to text and the other unchecks all the boxes on a page.
We had a cat called Scunger. She used to shit on the kitchen floor.

131·9 months agoIt’s not a good idea. It’s a fucking terrible idea. It’s the sort of utter bollocks espoused by utter idiots who can’t accept that the only way to survive is to change the way we live.

Technology@beehaw.org•The internet thinks this video from Gaza is AI. Here's how we proved it isn't.
6·9 months agoWhy would anyone think it’s AI? The sound could well have been dubbed in though.

You can either spend your time generating prompts, tweaking them until you get what you want and then using more prompts to refining the code until you end up with something that does what you want…
or you can just fucking write it yourself. And there’s the bonus of understanding how it works.
AI is probably fine for generating boiler plate code or repetitive simple stuff, but personally I wouldn’t trust it any further than that.
