1·6 months agoGreat list - thanks for sharing! I hadn’t heard of Inkscape - that’s a good find.
More alternatives here in the Alternatives menus of this site: https://www.rebeltechalliance.org/stopusingbigtech.html

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Anyone know of a linux tasks app that can open the json backup files from Tasks.org?English
1·6 months agowow! that’s quite a serious undertaking… especially if you need to be able to interact with it e.g. create new tasks, change due dates, mark as done/not done.
you sure?

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What old technology are you surprised is still in use today?
23·6 months agoRSS. And very happy that it is!
As long as software is available in the Software Manager to be installed that way… I don’t care what format it’s in.
But don’t make normies go to the terminal. It’s inhumane, and really does not help the masses get away from big tech - which is a worthier goal than keeping your software terminal-only.
oops. linked now…

Linux@lemmy.ml•GNU Taler (a swiss FLOSS alternative to Visa, Mastercard and Paypal) begins operating in Switzerland as Version 1.0 releasesEnglish
3·8 months agoIt says “Payments are made after exchanging existing money into electronic money with the help of an Exchange service, that is, a payment service provider for Taler.”
Do they say anywhere who that payment service provider is? And are there options for who to use?

Open Source@lemmy.ml•My journey towards more European, open source, privacy-oriented, and decentralized alternativesEnglish
31·8 months agoWe just put some of these privacy alternatives on a map: https://www.rebeltechalliance.org/stopusingbigtech.html (scroll down)
What’s missing is anything truly FOSS with no fixed country of origin, but it’s still fun to see how some of the main players spread out.
Enjoy!

1·8 months agoIs there not a service like Bandcamp, but for movies and TV?
I want to pay for stuff, so the creators are rewarded, and then I own a copy.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Netflix Puts AI Ads in Paid Tier: Pirate Everything at This Point
141·8 months agoIf there was a Bandcamp for film and TV, then I would buy stuff there. DRM free.
But until then…
I installed Mint in a cheap mini PC to self host, and have had problems with external USB storage drives.
They kept dismounting, until I realised you have to give them a permanent mount location (why?!).
And they kept losing power because Linux had a default setting that USB devices ‘auto suspend’ after some time. This took ages to diagnose, and command line stuff to fix 😔
Other than that it seems to be a solid distro.
Also - I think these distros should make it simpler to partition the SSD on install. I used to easily do that when building Windows PCs but it was not clear I was making the right choices with Mint, so I went with the default.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Sham consent popups finally deemed illegal! 🎉English
6·8 months agoOh… I thought it meant that those cookie banners were ‘false consent’ and therefore render the data collected to be illegal?
Please provide more info - I would like to learn more about this subject!
That is a great find. Thank you!
Totally. And that “legitimate interest” nonsense takes ages to click through 🤦
