  • and if it could be sent to third parties then only with the user’s consent.

You literally said it. Apple removes this option.

Why are you even upset? Its not like you’re being forced to allow your data to be transmitted. The GDPR wants a standardised way of choosing which apps can track you and which don’t, and Apple is out of the norm. You’re just upset because the EU is forcing apple to standardise. Where you also upset when the EU forced apple to adopt USB-C too?

Also, I cannot shake off the feeling that everyone in this sub is just shilling allowing a massive US conglomerate to exploit all digital ad revenue on EU soil, while local smaller companies get jack.

It would be like some EU car manufacturer selling electric cars in the US that van only be charged using proprietary chargers from the EU. Surely consumers would be upset at the lack of choice, and with reason.

Or maybe not. After all, tesla was allowed to do just that for a very long time. In any case, the EU is opening business opportunities (or rather, re-opening them) by shutting down a monopolistic practice that harms competition. The US refuses to make use of their antitrust laws, so we have to do it for you. You’re welcome.

  • My opinion on the matter is irrelevant, I’m just explaining what the case is about.

The advertising industry is real, and will keep existing, whether you like it or not. And yes, having the option to be an informed consumer and choose who gets to track you is a net positive. Some people LIKE targeted ads.

Plus, it’s not like Apple was protecting you from ads so I don’t know what your point even is? You’re defending them having a monopoly on who gets to advertise to you, nothing more nothing less.

  • No. The GDPR is an all encompassing law, the logic of which being giving people THE CHOICE to let apps personalise their ads, or not. Apple takes away that choice by not allowing tracking by default on a per-app basis. This is what is at stake.

What Apple is doing is indeed disrespecting the spirit of the law by taking away the choice of being tracked, while also damaging EU businesses who rely on advertising because believe it or not, there are many small app creators as well as small advertising companies operating in the EU.

  • Can’t wait for Trump’s speech about how he single handedly united Europe:

“Nobody unites europeans better than me, believe me. When I’m done with my presidency they will be so united they will be tired of it. Yeah, they will be tired of how united they are. This will be the most united union this country has ever seen. Not like Biden, who claims he has a handicap of 6. Can you believe that? Biden, a handicap of 6. He’s so senile he believes he’s a better golfer than me. Anyways, that Hunter Biden laptop…”

  • Good alternative? Hum, I’ll have to disagree with you there.

Firstly, Heliboard it is closer to Gboard than to FUTO, which is closer to Swiftkey. Its actually the reason why I went with FUTO, I need that split keyboard.

Secondly, prediction on Heliboard is just not there. Like, at all. It was absolutely maddening to use, it would predict completely unrelated words even when using custom libraries.

And it actually got worse over time because it started saving nonsense words like “GRT” or “hafe” directly onto my personal dictionary. At one point all I would get was nonsense word after nonsense word. I had to abandon it, it was borderline unusable after a certain point.

Like the commenter above, I too want to sponsor FOSS projects as much as possible, but the offers simply aren’t quite there yet.

I have never received a DM from another user on lemmy despite being more active than OP.

I’m not subscribed to many communities. Maybe linux and BuyEuropean and not much else.

I doubt that’s the reason for the spam.

Yeah, that’s what I’m concerned about. Getting random CSAM, or Gore, or some f’ed up stuff like that. Images should at the bare minimum come censored before clicking.

I didn’t even have the option to click any placeholders, it just automatically loads the whole thing (but maybe its just the front-end I’m using).

  • searxng which is a decentralized search engine similar to the fediverse, it lets you customize search providers and i have it set to show ddg, presearch, qwant, and startpage

How do you set it up like so? I couldn’t find such settings.

Anyways, Consider whether using that is the best thing we can be doing for the EU… Using anonymous search engines instead of a local one that will at least profit some and pay taxes here.
