Wouldn’t it be lovely? Unfortunately, we’ve got a lot of fighting on the ground to convince our fellow citizens to get their asses there instead of some weird 90s fantasy world.

Long story, I suppose, but the short of it is that this guy was a prominent celebrity chef who, more than just eating with people, was a strong advocate of cross-cultural dialogue and the value of culture (including food, naturally) as a means of communication between peoples and a way of spreading understanding. Very outspoken politically, anti-xenophobic, anti-racist, anti-exploitation.

So combining cultural tolerance (something many of us would like to hope is American, if we can get the shovel out and dig deep down inside) and enjoying food (very American) hits close for many of us.

In general, .world is much less radical than many places on Lemmy. But they’re far from neoliberals. The average poster is slightly left of a Berniecrat, probably; that is to say, either a very strong SocDem or a very weak DemSoc.

This is especially evident the way they get whipped into a froth any time actually existing (and former) socialist countries get brought up.

It’s funny that all the “AES” countries that are brought up are just authoritarian states, and sometimes, for that matter, authoritarian capitalist states. It’s almost like the people championing these supposedly socialist countries are just fascists painted red.

Funny enough, we have an extant letter from one of Aurelius’s teachers yelling at him (while he was Emperor no less) for going down to a nice beachside resort town and then spending the whole time working on affairs of state, including working by candlelight all night long. Some sleep would have done poor Marcus some good, one expects.

I looked for the good. The meme is the good. I also looked for the bad - and commented. To recognize the good without the bad is to create a false image of reality that will inevitably come crashing down; to recognize the bad without the good is also a false image, but a miserable one, and not one that will necessarily come crashing down.

I express disappointment because I believe we can be better. I express disappointment because I see a value worth loving in the meme.
