Senior Chief Petty Officer. Starfleet is in my blood, and I’ve spent my entire adult life in service to boldly going.

Keiko and Molly are my favorite humans, but Transporter Room 3 will always be my favorite.

Just don’t ask who what’s in the pattern buffer.

  • I once had a granola wrapper blow away in the wind, and I felt so bad I started looking for trash on my way out.

Then I realized I could be doing that every time and I started bringing shopping bags with me on hikes and grabbing any trash I see until the bag is full or I leave.

    It’s made me realize something.

Even the people who hike several miles into deer paths, the kind you would expect to be the less than casual group and therefore should know better, are fucking disgusting.

Humans are gross and it’s nothing new, we know the most about ancient cultures that left a lot of garbage.

  • Skilled truckers

I have met truck drivers that can (and have demonstrated) back their trailer up to a cargo dock blindfolded.

I’ve met some that can navigate turning radii (radiuses? Radiens?) smaller than my old Nissan.

And then I’ve also met some that couldn’t figure out their 13ft tall trailer can’t fit under a 12ft 8 bridge…

For the most part though, in my experience truck drivers are better drivers than 97% of regular drivers.

  • Under five minutes.

I interviewed, accepted the job offer at the end, showed up for my first scheduled shift and found out my manager wasn’t the polite manager I interviewed with.

For the record, I was supposed to start at 9am. It was 8:45 when I walked in.

Manager, literally yelling from about 300ft away: YOU’RE LATE!

Me, confused: I’m 15 minutes early?

Manager: I EXPECT YOU TO BE HERE HALF A HOUR BEFORE EVERY SHIFT, IF YOU’RE LATE AGAIN YOU’RE ON THIN FUCKING ICE

And I turned my happy ass around and walked out.

I don’t care if it was some bullshit tactic to “weed out” people, that is completely unacceptable behavior and in my younger years I have gotten into fist fights over someone speaking to another like that.

I had another job inside a week.

I don’t care if they had someone to fill my spot the next day. It wasn’t worth the time.

    It was.

In Ohio? I’m almost positive it isn’t legal. It’s definitely illegal in states like California. But they’re banking on nobody recording their interview audio (which I will now be doing as Ohio is single-party state) and nobody complaining if asked.

I doubt it’s a company policy, but I did send an email to their company offices to complain about it, for all the good it will do.

Not programming, but in the same vein, A Trek Bicycle store manager asked me in an interview if I would be willing to work a trial shift the next day building bicycles. Unpaid, of course. Just to see if I was a good fit.

Of course, since I was used to building 50 a day, I would have gotten all of them done in a single shift whereas they were needing to call in stores from surrounding areas to come help in a few days.

I laughed and said if they needed help tomorrow I would be happy to work for my usual fee of $20/bike.

Oddly, I did not get the job

  • I know just enough about Linux to know I should have been getting into it when I graduated over a decade ago.

I also know just enough to know it can do pretty much everything I need, as long as I’m willing to switch to a Linux alternative with similar capabilities.

However, I am Linux-dumb and deeply set into my windows, to the point where I’m not sure I have the technical savvy to switch.

From my understanding, Linux works very well, as long as you know what you’re doing.

I’m sure I’m overestimating the learning curve but it’s still intimidating.

  • If you mean the cheap white/green plastic injection molded chairs? I’ve never had one break on me. That’s an insult to the chair.

If you mean the shitty things sporting goods stores keep in their giant bins as soon as you walk in the door during spring? Yeah that tracks. Although I’ve had some that require fancy slides and buttons to collapse, thus making them harder to fold than this wet lump of shit.

  • You first.

But seriously, it gets annoying, but at the same time it’s the biggest scam on the fediverse right now that I know of. So I feel like a little visibility once in awhile (not 6 times a day) that lets people know about it is fine.

To anyone who knows: is there a way to filter out usernames containing that name? Like if I could block dms from my chosen instance, that’d be great. I’ve been getting 2-3 a week.
