I’m AuDHD - officially diagnosed ADHD and self-diagnosed (for now) with ASD. I also suffer from a great deal of Imposter Syndrome.
I have been Lemmy only since the 3rd party app thing also. I also stopped using Twitter when Musk bought it, and have Mastadon on my to-do list but I’m not sure if I want to spin up my own instance or make an account elsewhere. Other than that I have no other social media accounts and never have.
As for other Fediverse platforms, I’m strongly opposed to the for profit ones, but happy to see all the open source ones.
And bad actors will use that feeling (for those that have it) against them, and to call out reporting like this as a conspiracy (that will of course ironically be broadcast through the Rights media network by the very people that have been spreading the real conspiracies from the start).
Maybe a long shot, but as someone with ADHD and self diagnosed autism, I would encourage you to look into the possibility. I struggled in school all the way through, constantly told “if only you applied yourself”, the problem was I was already working harder and didn’t realize the system wasn’t designed for my brain. Really the world in general isn’t designed for anyone neurodivergent, but your life still has value, you just need help figuring out how the whole unexplained thing works.
Yep, AI has been shown to create sources (books/websites/etc.) names out of just pieces of the question asked and do it with the confidence that it’s real.
TIL I learned that Chegg was 1) still around 2) did more than sell college textbooks.
It must be sad to see your company value evaporate at the hands of the equivalent of liar-Russian-roulette, where the AI will return an answer to most anything. And it will return that answer with complete confidence, giving no indication if the result is real or completely fabricated.
You do have to look at the merch tables with a grain of salt though, as many of them know Trump is in a dementia spiral and losing his marbles. They also know that his rally goers will buy just about anything and are more than happy to pretend for their $$$.
Yeah, I think for 99% of people tech has really stopped evolving and we have allowed corporate bean counters to lock shit down and then abandon it. When the nerds ran the show we had innovation and constant improvement of a product because technology is awesome. Then capitalism killed it. Now you get a cool car with a shit infotainment system outdated and never updated the day you take delivery, when we could have some crazy shit with badass HUDs and sensors for everything. We could make it harder for assholes on the road to try and kill everyone. We could make all cars in the area aware of the road hazard driving 45 in a 55 during rush hour. None of that stuff makes the line graph go up though, so we wait for the next nerd with money and a desire to create the future.
Has someone posted an argument, or do you in the future see yourself seeing an argument with someone on here taking the side of “alternative facts” and letting that change your mind? If not then it’s just someone likely downvoted to the bottom that people will ignore anyways, not worth the time to post it. I think something like Facebook works for these types of things better, as the population is generally older and more likely to see and reshare just any nonsense true or not.
Because I personally don’t see the fediverse as a great medium for trying to bring people into the cult, and the ability to bring people out of the cult is even less likely online, fediverse or not.
The original Facebook was just “hot or not” for a college campus, and required invites.
I used to do this as a kid, and would add cheese to make it a “sandwich”.
For commercial services like Twitter or Reddit the bots make sense because it lets the platforms have inflated “user” numbers while also more random nonsense to sell ads against.
But for the fediverse, the goals would be, post random stuff into the void and profit?? Like I guess you could long game some users into a product that they only research on the fediverse, but seems more cost effective for the botnets to attack the commercial networks first.

So basically academics finding people to fund a large scale lab experiment, they want to get working by 2030. It sounds like they sold Google on an idea (for funding) and now have to move their idea from the lab to the real world. It does sound safer than water cooled plants of old at least.

I think the main driver behind people misinformed about AI content comes from the fact that outside of tech people, most have no idea that AI will:
100% make up answers to things it doesn’t know because either the sample size of data they have ingested was to small or was bad. And it will do this with the same robot confidence you get for any other answer.
AI that has been fed to much other AI generated content will begin to “hallucinate” and give some wild outputs, very similar to humans suffering from schizophrenia. And again these answers will be given as “fact” with the same robotic confidence.

I don’t buy music like I used to, but when I do it’s probably a CD from the artists site, or something like nugs.net that usually have several lossless download formats. I listen to mostly live music these days though, so anything else is probably on etree or archive.org.

If Constellation received a federal loan guarantee, much of the risk attached to the project would be shifted to taxpayers in the event of a default. It also would reduce the borrowing costs needed to finance to the restart. The project still needs to obtain regulatory approvals to move forward and would require intensive safety oversight during and after the restart.
Well that doesn’t sound good, I would like some reassurance. Constellation, what say you?
“Rest assured that to the extent we may seek a loan, Constellation will guarantee full repayment,” the company’s statement said. “Any notion that taxpayers are taking on risk here is fanciful given that any loan will be backstopped by Constellation’s entire $80-billion-plus value.”

Super, a for profit company worth 3.11 trillion USD (as of 1:25pm EDT) that just needs government handouts for it’s business based on choices it has made to further its own worth. That sounds great, I’m sure taxpayers will get a return on that investment right? Right??
In September, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro touted thousands of energy jobs that will be created by Constellation’s plans at Three Mile Island. Constellation, which plans to rename the facility the Crane Clean Energy Center, has claimed it will generate about $3 billion in state and federal tax revenue.
OK, so $3 billion minus $1.6 billion equals $1.4 billion, minus whatever Microsoft gets as a handout (likely equal to or more than $1.6 billion) equals potential negative billions? Yay capitalism! I’m so happy that the US is willing to help small businesses like this.
HR is designed and there to protect the company from employees, they are not really your friend any more than the corporation is your friend. They can be friendly, yes, in the same way you can work for a place that “takes care of it’s workers”, but they serve the business NOT you. I mean the name really breaks it down, Human Resources. They are there to manage the humans for the business just like any other commodity. They are also sometimes called Human Capital Management (HCM), and have a focus on training/education and extracting the most value from each employee.
You may find Harris the lesser of two evils, and want a progressive candidate like I think the majority does, but Harris is certainly running a more progressive platform than any in the past few decades. Again a low bar, but it is a step in the direction I think, and what the majority wants to see. I think as government reps get younger we’ll naturally see things become more progressive/diverse. It’s just waiting out the old white guard.
I do not see Twitter, Threads, or BlueSky as any part of the Fediverse since they are all for profit corporations. Fediverse is about being free of the corporate overlords.
