I use PieFed rather than lemmy as my default these days, but the answer is the same for both. I love that they’re community driven, community hosted federated spaces that let people find the experience they want, and that they’re strongly resistant to corporate takeover and centralisation.

What I don’t like so much is the increase in debate bro type folk that are slowly drifting over from reddit. Of course, they’re at least partly dealt with by the things I mentioned earlier, but still, I wish we could undo some of the in your face debating attitudes that people have been trained to default to by toxic social media

I don’t like there is no way to get notification (subscribe to) a post to see new replies that come in after I’ve read the post for the first time…

I’ve moved to PieFed now as my default instance instead of lemmy, and this is one of the main reasons why! And you can do it at the community level as well, to be notified when a new post is made to a given community

The airport “Marriott” in Santiago de Chile. That place was a hole, and a tiny one at that.

There’s no one size fits all answer. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

There is a manual way to import posts one at a time, so that’s a option.

That’s exactly how I did it when we spun up the new instance.

And once all the of the content was here, we transferred kicked off the transfer process.

It’s not feature complete, as you said. In our case, it broke, because of a bug around the way it handled community names that use upper case letters, which required editing the database to fix

But despite that, at the end of it, we have the old content on the new community. Even if it doesn’t federate, it’s not lost

The piefed community migration feature does import old posts, but it doesn’t refederate them, so they’ll only be visible to local users

Something fell over in our server, so Kaity is spinning up a new server and rebuilding lemmy on it

We bypass the issue. We use DJI mini mics, which allow you to connect multiple mics to a single base receiver, and that receiver appears as a stereo sound source.

I haven’t used Reddit for years, and I have no idea about those terms. If they’re a Reddit thing, I don’t recognise them.

Lemmy is also less tolerant of debate bros.

Why does the general attitude on Lemmy seem to lean toward more censorship and silencing of speech

Because “censorship” in this context is a weasel word. What people complaining about censorship really want, is the ability to be more openly racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic etc. What people pushing back against that want is less bigotry.

But because the bigots can’t own their bigotry, they hide behind “censorship” and not having enough “free speech”.

This is literally youtube saying “The president says that hating on folks is ok, and we will make more money by aligning with that”. It’s not them taking a stance on free speech, because they still block stuff that costs them money. They still demonetise or block things that are supportive of LGBT folk for the flimsiest of reasons, none of which they would do if censorship or free speech were their reasoning.

This has nothing to do with “censorship” and everything to do with a deliberate attempt not to increase free speech, but to shift “allowed” speech to the right

I wear clipons, because I need prescription glasses, and having to swap from prescription glasses to prescription sunglasses back and forth multiple times a day is an ADHD recipe for losing an expensive pair of glasses.

I take my clipons off indoors though, but that’s mostly because it’s really hard to see indoors with them on :P
