My first contact was in 91 as a 13yo exchange student somewhere in the backend of Bavaria. Checkoslovakia was still a country and the Wall had only fallen two winters beforehand. Absolutely loved it, for some reason. Didn’t get to come back as often as I thought I would, but every time has been a pleasure.

What did you learn from this?

Je me souviens quand j’étais étudiant et que j’avais été voir une école à Paris. J’hésitais et pendant une pause calme dans une cour intérieure, c’est là que j’ai entendu le “bruit de fond” de Paris et me suis dit “même pas en rêve”.

Là je vis dans une petite préfecture de la diagonale du vide, et ma mère annecienne est à chaque fois absolument ébahie par l’absence de bruit la nuit. Elle qui souffre tant de vivre à côté d’un feu sur une avenue dont la fréquentation n’a fait qu’augmenter avec les ans.

À Wuhan j’avais trouvé un bon équilibre : chaque quartier contient de grandes résidences fermées, ce qui réduit considérablement le trafic à proximité directe des résidences car entre les grans axes et les residences se trouvaient les bureaux et autres bâtiments commerciaux. La nuit en été, j’entendais surtout les grenouilles du petit lac au pied des immeubles, et franchement ça fait une sacrée différence pour le moral.
