Linux@lemmy.ml•Are distros really different or is it more about preference?English
3·7 months agoA lot of gaming communities that are migrating over are flowing to the aur for their community tools.
Wasn’t there malware found in the AUR just last week?
For Linux newbs, AUR is the Arch User Repository where anyone can post packages and scripts. It’s highly recommended to NOT trust anything on there due to the risk of malware. If you don’t use Arch and stick to your distro’s application manager you don’t have to worry about it

Linux@lemmy.ml•What problems does Linux have to overcome to get more usersEnglish
1·7 months agoBut for the average user it’s a big negative actually.
With gamers generally being steered towards Bazzite right now, it’s already addressed in part. For everyone else, Linux Mint gets recommended a lot.
Having 2-3 starting choices based on use case is a manageable number for anyone.

11·7 months agoFor the vast majority of users Linux is just a worse deal.
The vast majority of users only need an office suite, an internet browser, and maybe the ability to play games. Linux does these just fine, with less bullshit than Windows to boot.
The real problem is inertia. People tend to go with what they’re familiar with, and most of them are familiar with Windows. And those that might be willing to try a new OS get turned away from Linux due to outdated stigmas about it being harder to use than Windows. While that stigma may still be true for enthusiast distros like Arch, new users are generally steered away from them

1·7 months agoThe software looks nice, but it seems there’s no 3D capable hobby-tier. 3D modelling starts at Pro-tier, which is >$700 per year. That’s a low price for commercial software, but not a good option for hobbyists

Linux@lemmy.ml•What problems does Linux have to overcome to get more usersEnglish
11·7 months agoFor example, you actively and intentionally go to the default software store, navigate to the updates tab, update a package you’ve already installed and clearly want, and do so from the official OS repository… This requires that you enter your password to protect you from what exactly?
I have never had this happen before across 3 distros, and I really doubt any casual user will have this experience either

6·7 months agoI had a similar problem with a couple of friends a few weeks back. They’re a couple with a lot of debt, so they usually do everything they can to save money. Then the main water line started leaking.
I asked a few questions, and it turned out they could solder the pipes themselves and save hundreds on hiring a plumber. But the wife kept insisting that they were both too dumb to figure it out and by me saying it’s easy to learn she just took it as me calling them stupid (which was a weird bit of gaslighting).
They didn’t even look up a video on how to do it. I looked some up as a sanity check, and yeah it’s fairly straightforward. Here’s a really good video on it for those curious.
Even then, WINEtricks does wonders

Hell, my employer used to just have us turn in Excel-based at the end of each week. They were super easy and fast to fill out. After the switch to Jira it takes 3x longer.

History@mander.xyz•The successful 70-year campaign to convince people the USA and not the USSR beat HitlerEnglish
79·8 months agoAll this statistics on manpower yet you’re completely ignoring all of the shipments of food and materials the US sent to the USSR under lend-lease. The USSR would have starved and run even more extreme shortages on tanks and aircraft without US contributions.
Stop presuming you know more than other people and READ MORE BOOKS.
I have read books om the Eastern front, from the Russian perspective. They tend to dismiss anything not Russian as a contribution to the war. That goes anywhere from claiming US materials did little tp saying that Ukrainians and Belarusians were incompetent, even though their soldiers, territory, qnd civilians bore the brunt of the fighting.
Let’s also not forget that the reason the USSR was able to move their Siberian divisions to defend Moscow from Germany is because they found out that Japan wasn’t planning on attacking the USSR - they were planning to attack Pearl Harbor instead. If Japan had decided to attack the USSR instead, they wouldn’t have fresh winter-hardened troops to break the seige of Moscow, and would likely have to reroute divisions to reinforce a front line against the Japanese. And let’s not forget that the US was the backbone (though not the only member of the allies) in the fight against the Japanese Navy.
Let’s also not forget that a significant factor in the Germans advancing so quickly in Operation Barbarossa is because a lot of people in Ukraine hated the Russians because of the Holodomor. And the USSR didn’t win any favors with Poles when they stabbed Poland in the back by partitioning it with Germany.
Reread my earlier comment. I never said the US won the war on it’s own. I said the Allies won together, and that none of the members of the alliance could have won without the others.
But maybe that doesn’t convince you. If not, I don’t care.
Stop presuming you know more than other people and READ MORE BOOKS.
I recommend you take your own advice. Pick up a book other than “Russia at War 1941-1945”. Preferrably something that isn’t full of anti-Ukrainian and anti-Belarusian propaganda.
