Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Are you a feminist? (If so why, if not why not?)English
59·10 months agoDefining it as paid menstrual leave is kind of the problem. Hear me out.
Women should be able to take paid leaves from work to deal with menstrual problems, but it shouldn’t stop there. All people should be able to take leave from work when they need it.
So, if it is redefined as paid leave, then it equalizes the field.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What are the best alternatives to youtube that have a community?English
2·11 months agoI think they recently updated something to allow finding videos across different instances easier. But I don’t use it, so you will need to look that up.
Aren’t Franklings what we call people from France?

In the show Andor, there is a character named “Kleaha” But until about halfway through season 2, I thought it was Princess Leaha. It was only that I saw the subtitle that wrote her name out that let me know it was a different person.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•We all know grammar Nazis. What incorrect grammar are you completely in defence of?English
6·11 months agoThat is not sharing grammar rules. Is just something we were all incorrectly taught.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Linux has over 6% of the desktop market? Yes, you read that right - here's howEnglish
6·11 months agoAwesome! Mint is great, it’s my number one recommendation.
I’ve never tried vr before and I’d really like to at some point.
I use Fedora with Plasma.
I hate customizing ui elements, so I wanted something that used plasma and looked good with tweaking things.
I don’t want to deal with Snap, so my choices were a bit limited, but I’ve used Fedora in the past and liked it. I still do.
I did try arch with plasma and couldn’t get hardware video decoding to work in the browser, so I switched to Fedora. I was pleasantly surprised that Fedora had so much more configured for my laptop out of the box.
I hate that word “swag”.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Linux has over 6% of the desktop market? Yes, you read that right - here's howEnglish
48·11 months agoA long time ago when Linux was around 2-3% someone said that macOS adoption by software companies happened when it got to 5% of the marketshare.
If Linux continues down the path, we might see real support from some of the holdouts.
Before anyone says to use an alternative, sometimes there are not workable alternatives.

11·11 months agoJust curious and not judging your decision in anyway, but… “What are you waiting for?”

11·11 months agoI never got gnome, it’s like macOS, but I never enjoyed using it even after being a Mac user.
Plasma and cinnamon are my top desktop recommendations.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Realizing Arch isn't for me after updating broke VLCEnglish
1·11 months agoI’m sorry, I thought about it more and remember the reason I had trouble with arch the last time.
It was that I could not get hardware decoding to work when playing videos in Firefox.
Everything reported that it should be working, but it didn’t.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Realizing Arch isn't for me after updating broke VLCEnglish
684·11 months agoArch is really for those who like to troubleshoot and actively maintain things when they break.
I’m pretty decent with linux and for the most part, I can fix arch when it breaks, but I don’t have the time for that. For that reason, I use Fedora and recommend mint.
Voice to text always messes up that word for me.
I have the L 14 GEN two so it’s probably the same processor and I don’t know if my eight GB is salted or not but I was able to upgrade to 16 GB anyway I noticed that in Lennox I get significantly better battery life. It probably goes from 2 to 3 hours to 4 to 5 maybe.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What direction do you think tech in general will go in 5 years (ignoring AI)English
6·1 year agoI don’t think much will change in 5 years that is not AI.
Everything is focused on AI right now. So just more powerful hardware that is geared towards running ai is all I think that will happen.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•New US visa rules will force foreign students to unlock social media profilesEnglish
22·1 year agoI’m so happy that I was able to skip all that stuff.
I stoped using my mainstream social media around the years ago.
I kept the profiles, and I think it is good as I can just share them if I’m ever required to.
I love collecting books and most of the ones I’ve read, I’d never want to get rid of them.
We are already in ww3. It’s just the start of it and in the future, the year we live in will be part of the dates people study when they study ww3.

I get what you’re saying, but if a woman is given more benefits than a man, businesses are disincentivized to hire women.
