I’m still on Nextcloud but gave Opencloud a trial run this week. Seems promising but I’m gonna give it time to mature - the setup was a nightmare, the out of the box compose is a giant mess, trying to use any OIDC that’s not keycloak is a pain (why do they use hardcoded client_ids???), and the Android app still feels very limited.
That being said, the speed difference was wild, and it does feel like it’s going to my next go-to once it matures a bit. Nextcloud is an outdated behemoth that I’m looking forward to replacing, but for now it does everything I need and does it pretty well.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's up with this straight up pro-china and pro-russia stuff on Lemmy lately?English
18·1 year agoIt’s legitimately insane how people look at the US’s dogshit excuse for a pandemic response and think other countries were too restrictive, when in reality even those that were actually trying like China was still weren’t restrictive enough.
This is what I ran into when I first decided to try a linux system desktop after ten years. I wasn’t familiar with the new distros around these days, so decided to try Bazzite first. Immediately ran into a driver issue that was apparently not fixable until the (already released) fix made its way into their official repo or something.
Shelved that and gave CachyOS a try (made more sense anyway since I used arch in college and had a steam deck since day 1), and it’s been my daily driver for 6 months now.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What problems does Linux have to overcome to get more usersEnglish
20·1 year agoEverything mainstream is a black box corporate ecosystem these days. Kids learn how to use specific programs and mobile apps, but don’t learn anything about the OS or machine itself because everything is isolated and “just works”.
It’s a really weird spot to be in. We’re used to the older generations being bad with tech, but now it’s also the younger ones too.

12·1 year agoWe didn’t kill off enough Nazis in WWII, we didn’t kill off enough confederates in the civil war, and as a result they’re practically running the world now.
Just look at every single big subreddit lmao. The only way to use that site is to leave every single default and join smaller communities.

Linux@lemmy.ml•if you use GrapheneOS on a pixel device, is it something you'd recommend for a privacy worried user? How seamless is running it after install?English
4·1 year agoI switched to it this past winter, same time I moved from Windows to CachyOS on my desktop, and I haven’t looked back on either device since.
Debloats the hell out of the thing, and personally I love how deeply documented everything is. Reasons and justifications are given for every design decision, but it’s also not an extremely opinionated ecosystem - if you need a google app or w/e for any reason, the option is there. there are some limitations like the integrity API dogshit, but for the most part, it’s a near flawless experience.
It’s just twitter 2.0, may as well be closed source, and it’s a joke to call it decentralized. I’m only on there because the community I keep up with is mostly on there, but the site is literally unusable without the blocklist feature, which of its own is incredibly easy to abuse. It was far better when it was almost entirely a leftist space, before the big twitter exodus of liberals.
Mastodon’s looking far better on the casual usability front lately so maybe folks will start moving over there soon.
Pretty much. Even if I didn’t prefer owning the actual files and managing my own media server, streaming services are just dogshit these days anyway. Overpriced, libraries are all ass, no one service will ever have everything you want, constantly removing shit, they’re awful.
A jellyfin setup backed by an *arr stack may be a lot more work than a Netflix subscription but it’s legitimately better in every single way otherwise.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Do gamers actually like the look of gaming computers and accessories?English
2·1 year agoI do the same but with blue lights on everything. No patterns, color-changes, or whatever - just everything on a low, static blue
I started D2 with Shadowkeep’s launch, sunk in 12k hours, spent who knows how much money on bullshit cosmetics, and finally quit for good this past November.
I’ve made some lifelong friends through that community, pushed myself to do some serious challenges (solo Nez and pre-Resilience solo GM Lightblade probably my top two), and I wouldn’t take all the time spent back, but the game and studio are toxic as fuck and putting it behind me has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
I do legitimately miss the social aspect we built around it - our small community discord has been incredibly quiet since most of us dropped the game. And pushing myself for lowman challenges and such was exhilarating. But the problems of that game and Bungie as a whole far outweigh any remaining value, and besides they’re pushing the game in such a dogshit direction anyway. FOMO, power creep to hell and back, abysmal pvp sandbox andmatchmaking, I’m good.
love this for us

5·1 year agoPeople will cite a lot of issues with nextcloud’s performance and stability, and I do get that it’s a bit bloated, but anecdotally it’s worked pretty much fine for me since day 1 (minus a few self-inflicted issues mostly regarding permissions). I’m not using the AIO though, I just use the nextcloud docker image with my own collabora instance running alongside it
On the peripheral end, ElGato. You can usually get their stuff to work but they provide little to no support, usually have issues to work out, and you’ll always be relying on third party replacements for their software.
I got a stream deck plus with the xlr dock, since even though I quit content creation I like what it provides and have no reason to downgrade my mic, but the thing has been a headache and a half ever since I switched to cachyOS.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Which actor/actress are you unable to dissociate from one of his/her role?English
1·1 year agoHe took the money from that franchise and went wild with it, doing whatever crazy ass roles he wants and it’s so good to see. Not to mention how incredibly outspoken he’s been about trans rights and JKR’s bigotry.
Same two here. CoMaps for general use, Magic Earth for navigation. Hopefully a true FOSS alternative comes along at some point.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•US question: Would you approve of your state seceding from the Union, declaring independence from the United States? I think California, Oregon, and Washington would, and probably Colorado too.English
2·1 year agoSame. Individual states seceding would get nowhere. New England as a whole? That could work lmao

I’m not sure on the iOS app, but I think the Android app literally just came out this week - I was mostly disappointed in the limited folder sync options, but I get it, it’s super new.
I’m definitely keeping an eye on the project, the google drive replacement space is in dire need of something with a more modern stack behind it, and if they clean up the blemishes this will be golden.
