Reddit was never about free speech.
They always removed subs and didn’t care unless there was massive backlash.
They literally changed their rules so they could remove the harm-reduction DNM subs.
Oh, and don’t get me started on how biased the average reddit mod is… Those people legit make me sick.
They can run ads on those subs, just not ads that would be “family friendly.”
i.e. There will inevitably be some losers on twitter saying “OMG LOOK AT WHAT AD REDDIT SHOWED ME” and then use that to try and get the company to change to fit their agenda.

Yeah… the censorship has been out of control on reddit for years now.
It’s really set the stage for mods to feel like they’re supposed to abuse their power against people they don’t like.
The modlog for lemmy is great, but we still need more free speech friendly instances and communities to avoid this kind of censorship.

It’s how it goes. Businesses let almost anyone in while they’re building up a userbase, then they get rid of people who make operating the business just a little bit inconvenient. Everyone else then gets to use them as an example to be afraid to say what they really want.
It works.
It’s not difficult at all.
It’s only difficult when you listen to and respond to the whiners.
The solution is to let them cry themselves out. They will get bored eventually and move on to something else when they realize they’re not getting a response.
