Technology@lemmy.zip•UK government inexplicably tells citizens to delete old emails and pictures to save water during national drought — 'data centres require vast amounts of water to cool their systems'English
27·1 year agoData storage does not consumes energy. Read and write data does. Deleting data initate database queries and other CPU activities. This request will more likely cause a spike in energy. It won’t save any energy in any case.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What other Communities would others like on Lemmy that don't already exist?

If you use new encryption and not re-use the existing I’d say there is no advantage in wiping
I installed I3 a few times. I did not get it and I was to lazy to look up how to use it. Somehow your post made me install it again. This time I took that moment to look up how to use it. Less than 15 min later I found myself banging my head against the wall. Should have looked it’s usage up the first time I installed it. This is what I need like 70% of the time. THNX!

Pro: it can be made to do everything
Con: you have to make it do it yourself (but it has easy wizards for common configs, so not a big issue)

More people and counties lost trust in- and respect for the USA. I no longer buy American and for all I care we don’t sell shit to them anymore. Trading with other countries will go up (if not it’s a win for the environment) Let’s see if the USA will manage and survive on their own.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•If we had to torture and murder millions of innocent children to stop global warming would that be okay?
12·1 year agoAt one hand I’d say : you really need (mental)help
At the other hand … Global warming is doing just that.
So if it’s guaranteed global warming is reversed and not starts over, one could reason it’s justified (biggest question, which/who’s children is it ghonna be)

It never stops to amaze me how many factories still depend on win-xp (yes, win-xp!). It was always too expensive to upgrade the apps and machines. By now many will never happen anymore because now it’s a multi-step upgrade and cost even more. And STILL they expect 2025 type, level and quality support.

31·1 year agoI think you may be confusing “instead of” with “as well as”
Nope, never said instead either ;)
While it’s an abandoned industrial site I’d like to point out to the Kreidsee, in Hemmoor in Germany which also is an abandoned quarry (1862 - 1976) which is filled with water. Today is’t used for deep diving and deco training and has it filled itself with all sorts of underwater life too (yes, i’ve seen it first hand).
So don’t get me wrong, I’m not against it, I’m just wondering about the effects this solution could/might have. I’d expect the higher humidity levels directly above the pond will have (negative) effect on the live expectancy of the panels too. So i’m just questioning if it’s a good idea in the long run, but I guess time will tell. (Would been nice if they left a pit uncovered so we have something to compare it with but I doubt that)

6·1 year agoYeah, would a panel farm at a heigh sheep can graze beneath not be lower impact?
That’s not what I said. I know about advantages of water cooling them, but i’m just wondering if this not might come with an un-expected ‘pricetag’ at some point in the future.
How does it compare to an alternative as mounting them over a parking lot (or even some roads)? Yes, the panels would be less efficient, but you don’t need to transport the electricity far and there would be savings on airco usage of the vehicles. Would it also be beneficial for the temp in the area not having the sun scorching the road but the panels which are air cooled at the top and bottom ?

101·1 year agoI know, old gravel pits, but I can’t help wondering what would be the effect of the lack of sunlight in the long run? You can’t compare them with deep underground reservoirs that has no sunlight either. They also have no fresh oxygen supply nor other external influences.
Find someone bashing Ubuntu - they would HAPPILY choose Ubuntu over win11.
This is both : funny and true (more true than funny though ;) )
I heard it can completely crash your system if your a noob.
You can crash anything if you try. Been there, done that. Just go ahead and start using it. Just keep backups which you always do, regardless the O/S and situation. (pro tip: TEST RESTORING THE BACKUPS)
Maybe make an extra backup before you try something and you’ll live. You could also use a separate partition to store your files so you can re-install without touching your data. Make that partition size ‘recognizable’ (t.ex. the biggest by far and label it) so you won’t mess up the partition selection when you re-install. And NO don’t ask me how I know!

Everything is now labeled “with AI”. Every app gets an ai function/tool/assistant (99% just to get training data). yeah, it’s a bubble waiting to burst. And it will.
