Exactly right. Most of us older coders have been warning of this for years. It was not benevolence that Microsoft, Google, Amazon so gleefully pushed for more coders and coding boot camps. They wanted a flood of labor to bring down salaries. They knew this was going to happen, and I’ve been calling it out for years. This is exactly what they wanted.

Yeah I thought about adding that in, but then people think “Like my car!” Pretty much only if you’re buying a literal junker knowing you’re going to refurbish and rebuild the entire thing into mint condition - and you know it’s a high value car, then you’ll probably make a profit. (Even then though, what’s the value of the time and money there)

I think it’s okay to spend money on a card but not to delude yourself into thinking it’s an investment. I think you can be right, maximizing your value, I also think you can spend 80k on a car, as long as you know that you’re spending 80k to drive, not expecting to ever make any of that money back.

Still lost value though. Investments and assets can gain or lose value. Cars only lose value.

I think it’s fine to own, but not as an asset but more of a cost to drive. “I am paying $30k (plus interest) to be able to drive for the next 10 years”. To me, that is a realistic expectation

Fine maybe not 50% immediately. I just ran the numbers and a Ford F150 purchased 2 years ago for 42k would today be worth (max) 30k. I wouldn’t exactly call that an investment, or an asset even. I would definitely call the loss of 12k in value depreciation.

Cars. Cars are stupidly called an asset, and I guess they retain some value, but not really. It loses 50% of it’s value the second you drive it off a lot and continues depreciating the longer you own it. It requires maintenance and gas, tags, insurance. It’s a liability. If you need one, then purchase it knowing that you are purchasing an item. A car is never an investment.

If everyone else says it works fine and it’s just you, well, I wonder what’s wrong with your system. Firefox is just a symptom. It could just be Firefox. It could be any number of other things wrong. For me a great example is when webgl fails I blamed Firefox. Turns out I have Nvidia drivers broken and it failed to enable hardware acceleration. A system locking up because of a rogue all? I smell something else wrong.

Other commenter is right, and it’s exactly why I don’t give much credit to Lemmy’s general opinion on AI. If it’s so bad that even the discussion around it has to be downvoted, then I don’t think they’re arguing in good faith. Personally ChatGPT has helped me immensely with my work. It’s not the world-changer everyone swears it’s going to be, I’m fully out of the hype train - However only a fool would say that it has no value at this point. If engineers are refusing to use it, they’re going to be left behind. The real job loss will be for those who refuse to use it altogether. Solid engineers see it as a new tool in their toolbelt and use it as such.

The hate is real here, and IMO most of it is unjustified. There are a few good points that are made:

• Training data was not ethically sourced. Can’t get around that, it just wasn’t. It was legal-ish, but it wasn’t moral. Image generators especially, the art was not willingly given - but IMO if you aren’t taking work out of their hands I don’t have a major issue with it.
• Same as your issue, AI is being shoved everywhere embodying the “If you’re a hammer everything is a nail”.
• Privacy concerns as you’ve talked about, and security.

That being said, I don’t have any issues with using it at home, local LLMs, and I’ll even say I use it daily to help with coding. I’ve been coding for 20 years and I have to admit it does help, if you know when to use it. It has sped me up considerably.

Definitely normal, your body is recovering. If it’s still happening in a week, then I’d start thinking about going to a doctor.
