Dslhas a signal strength limit that requires stations every so many linear meters of line. I forget what that is (and the actual terms) but I did dsl tech support once upon a time. If they don’t build one of those stations every like 1.5km or whatever it is, there is no dsl and they’re not doing it to support 1-5 people paying them $40 or whatever a month

In Japan, employers who have permanent employees need to offer the paid leave. There are various schemes for other special types of leave and there is government assistance. There might be something from smaller companies, but I’m not sure. In Japan, the 10 days is only for 正社員 seishain full-time permanent employees. I think companies can also decide the dates for half of that for you, which is dumb.

I switched companies. I started go when replacing php at a previous company. I wanted to do rust at the time, but my options from the CTO were go or newer php (we were 5.x IIRC). I chose go.

My current company decided on go before I started. There’s some python ml stuff and some other things in functional languages, but we’re primarily go. I don’t know why specifically it was chosen. The old codebase was a bit of go and the original legacy in Ruby. I’m definitely glad they decided to move away from Ruby slowly (and compleltely in the new codebase).

I used to work in Java and now work in Go writing backend services. I think I enjoy writing Go more than I did Java most of the time.

Well, it would have been if people updated it when making changes; now it’s just all an incorrect snapshot of an older version of wheel that no longer reflects reality.

One of my teammates used AI (our company heavily encourages it) to write code. It did what it was supposed to and the tests passed, but it was the most ugly and unmaintainable shit ever. For one example, I don’t want to have to untangle a for i = 0; i++; i <= len(foo) {} that has multiple ifs inside that separately increment and decrement the loop counter i when trying to troubleshoot an issue.

A friend told me about rust around 8 years ago and this was very much my first experience (at least with &str and lifetimes and borrow errors).

Either way, I’m allergic, so that checks out.

Taiwan is just barely visible on a good day from Yonaguni (it didn’t even really show up in the picture I took as anything). I don’t think the reverse is true; nothing on Yonaguni is all that tall whereas Taiwan has mountains in the east. Those ancient navigators were amazing at their trade.

As someone who was an adult in the US at the time, these things are not remotely comparable in size or scope. Freedom fries was as a concept was mocked even within groups that were in favor of the war and angry at France (at least where I was).

Someone would have to look at and understand the existing code and infrastructure rather than just throwing it all away and writing a data migration. In other words, it would never happen.

I used to work in healthcare IT until around 2008ish. Various clinics had things running on 3.11, 95, 98, etc.

For the 3.11 case, it was only controlling the door card/lock system IIRC and was not otherwise on the network, but some of the others, less so. We didn’t have direct control over the sites’ decisions and couldn’t really enforce anything so us removing them was not possible. We did everything we could to convince the site mgmt, of course.
