  • The first time someone told me about mbin/lemmy, I had that exact issue and just gave up on it for a few months. This is especially true as there doesn’t really exist any account migration (nor, probably, can there be one without any kind of centralized auth server or the like). I finally did move over, but two of the instances I used just shut down, one with basically no warning.

  • I would note that vacationing somewhere and living there are two different things. I came to Japan a few times before moving here (and failed my first time at living here due to visa issues). Even after moving, there’s a honeymoon period and things eventually just become normal. In other words, there are two things to keep in mind: don’t over-hype anywhere and build it up too much in your head or you’re asking for trouble and any problems you that aren’t physically confined to your home will follow you eventually so be sure to work on that separately.

That said, it’s certainly possible to move across the world. Break any goal down into achievable chunks of individual items that need to be done and track progress against that. Good luck!

  • Gluten free. It’s not confirmed fully, but I probably have Celiac as one of my parents does and a DNA test said I was a carrier of at least one known mutation. In Japan, there’s not treatment so getting it fully verified would involve adding gluten back to the diet for weeks, being miserable, and getting nothing but higher life insurance premiums. I miss good bread.

I also don’t drink much dairy as it upsets my stomach in large doses. Cheese is mostly fine (at least for ones without a ton of lactose). I pay for, but still sometimes eat, ice cream on occasion.

Other than that, I try to avoid most processed things. Not 100%, but a lot of what I eat is single-ingredient or homemade.
