For mental health reasons I’ve set my client to display the vote total, rather than independent up and down votes.

But the chapter - ASIO on the Brink - also reveals details of the “false allegations that ASIO was working in response to US intelligence direction and not on behalf of the Australian Government, and that US intelligence was implicated in the dismissal of the Whitlam Government”.

On 15 October 1975, the Leader of the Opposition, Malcolm Fraser announced the opposition would block the governments’ supply or money bills in the Senate until an election was called. The opposition took this action because it believed the government was incompetent and the worst government in our history.

41·7 months agoThe separation between software and hardware is not nearly as distinct as your comment suggests. Beyond (sometimes replaceable) firmware there’s microcode and embedded systems with their own software inside modules like the modem that allows your phone to actually talk to the network.

Graphene OS only runs on 16 models of phone, Google Pixels. I’ve bought a dozen or so Google hardware devices over the years and I refuse to go through that abysmal experience ever again.
Graphene OS might be amazing for all I know, but only supporting Google hardware makes it a joke in the real world outside of the Google fanboy bubble.
As for deleting all the content of your phone, what makes you think that border security or law enforcement won’t access your data directly from your backup on Google’s cloud?
As far as I can tell, this post is an advertisement for Graphene OS. In real world terms, in my opinion, it adds nothing of substance to the privacy or security landscape.

116·7 months agoWhile AWS is an American company, you might not know that it has data centres all over the planet. Anyone using AWS can configure where their data lives, and therefore which laws apply.
That said, I’d be interested in something that doesn’t store the data remotely at all.

Linux@lemmy.ml•How do i set up arch linux, with another distro already installed, without wiping the disk?
161·7 months agoThe real question is: Why?
Here’s some answers to your question:
- Backup your data, nuke the drive, start again.
chrootis the tool for the job. Backup your data before you accidentally nuke your drive.- Shrink the partition and write a new one in the empty space, but backup your data before you accidentally nuke your drive.
- Connect an external drive, install on it, but backup your data before you accidentally nuke your drive.
Finally, the reason that the wiki didn’t help is that the question is asked by either a person with not enough experience, or one who doesn’t need the wiki. This is a non trivial process and you should backup your data before you proceed, lest you accidentally nuke your drive.
Edit:
Also, anything you break can be fixed … but only if you have a backup.

Programming@programming.dev•This project uses Docker to create an environment where you can run containers on a remote host, in such a way that your local working directory is visible to the container and optionally use X11.
2·7 months agoYes, you can run it remotely too.
The biggest challenges with Docker are:
- You need to install a lot of stuff to use it.
- You cannot create a volume across the network
Many people think of Docker as a virtual machine, but a better way to look at it is as a security wrapper around a process.
For example, this project allows you to setup your build to store the build artefacts on your workstation while not having to install a crap ton of stuff to build it in the first place.
I use it for tools where I don’t care about the tool, just the data it produces. With a symbolic link to the launch command … see the examples … running a process locally is indistinguishable from running it remotely.
I’ve had similar “fun” with the character defaults on MySQL, from memory for a time it was Swedish by default, rather than UTF.
I’m guessing that they pasted code from inside Microsoft Word.
Remember … with great power comes … something.
Hmm … we should start collecting these.
Anyone know of an existing list?
If you look at the UTF definition, it seems that there are at least four of them. The weird one in your comment might actually be one of the other two because as far as I can tell, the “Greek Question Mark” looks identical to the “semicolon”.
Just the last one, right before the EOF.
Speaking of EOF, I wonder what a heredoc might do with this 😇
You are right … but, you’re not thinking big enough.
Think … sticky tape on the bottom of a mouse.

The flipside of this is that sometimes a response is just plain wrong and a dogpile of down votes shows that to the rest of the community, so disabling down votes is not the cure for everything.
