Privacy@lemmy.ml•YouTube to begin testing a new AI-powered age verification system in the U.S.English
12·9 months agoSo it’s off to PeerTube then, I guess? People could post the same video on both (yt and pt), and then on yt write something like “why not watch this on PeerTube instead?” although it’d probably get taken down.

World News@lemmy.ml•Trump orders US nuclear subs repositioned over statements from ex-Russian leader MedvedevEnglish
13·10 months agoThe Trumpster, as usual, has no idea what he’s talking about; I remember, I think it was in one of the debates he was asked about the nuclear triad and he clearly had no idea what it was. Always comforting to know that someone like that has their finger close to the button at all times.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•What do we think of Bluesky now?English
1·10 months agoYeah, I know, I had to keep myself from writing something along those lines as part of my initial comment. Hopefully Mrs. E won’t see this, as she has a somewhat fiery temperament and is quick with the rolling pin…

Open Source@lemmy.ml•What do we think of Bluesky now?English
7·10 months agoMrs. Erinaceus loves it, after fleeing Xwitter and being disappointed with Mastodon. However, in this Wired article/interview (which I read some time ago and might not remember all that well), Bluesky’s CEO comes across as being, well, a CEO. Judge for yourself: Bluesky Is Plotting a Total Takeover of the Social Internet.
I continue to have good luck with FreeTube, FWIW.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•I wish there was a "Right to have your account deleted"English
7·10 months agoThat’s why, when I have to email someplace to request account deletion, I write “Please delete my account and all the information associated with it.” Probably doesn’t make a difference, but worth a shot I guess.

Linux@lemmy.ml•For my mom the year of the Linux desktop it's already overEnglish
111·10 months agoReally out of my depth here, but anyway—
What model computer does your mom have? Does it by any chance have solid state drives that are RAID 0?
Have you tried Linux Mint? After really struggling with Fedora, I was able to get Mint up and running after a few minimal problems and haven’t looked back since.
Actually, full disclosure, I have to water down the coffee Mrs. Erinaceus makes, otherwise I’m risking heart palpitations and panic attacks, hence the need for a larger mug. Hmmm…I wonder if I could somehow learn to make the coffee myself… 🤔
If only they sold coffee mugs! Every time I look somewhere for swag, even if they do have coffee mugs, they’re just these diddly little 10 oz things–not big enough for this coffee achiever!

Technology@lemmy.ml•Environmentally-friendly AI? Is there such a thing?English
2·11 months agoThanks! 👍
BTW, are the Chinese way ahead of the US in this like they are with renewables and electric cars? They’ll probably figure out a way to have AI use significantly less power before “we” can.

Does Firefox have some sort of addon that will let you easily check to see if the site you’re on is being hosted by AWS, Google Cloud, etc?
