I wouldn’t have quit. I would’ve made my boss fire me instead and claim EI.

Then I would’ve sued my employer.

Customers complained? What kind of asshole would complain about someone wanting to keep themselves, and others around them, safe?

It also seems absurd that’s no law in Canada protecting people who want to wear additional PPE at work. We know how awful worker safety and protection is in the workplace, and it should be a human right to allow people the ability to use additional PPE beyond what the employer provides (nothing, in this case).

Can confirm from working in retail for 6+ years. Not only is it astounding, but additionally depressing because they are also people who are voting, driving etc.

That shit keeps you awake at night sometimes.

You’d be amazed at the stupid shit people complain about.

Not even amazed, but third-party embarrassed for these people.

What’s the complaint even about? I feel like it’s a younger sibling of racists who “complain” about people wearing turbans for no reason other than that they are racist.

          I would bet that you’re mostly right….

I think it’s people that have an emotional need that they can’t admit is emotional…

“I don’t like wearing masks, it makes me sad/uncomfortable”

And admitting that shows emotions and vulnerability. Can’t be vulnerable! I also don’t want to be the only person not wearing masks because then I’ll feel guilty and other feelings. Can’t be vulnerable!!!

So they have to try and make up bullshite to try and make it SEEM logical. So they invent logic to rationalize it.

But it’s stupid because it’s a valid emotion that needs to be dealt with emotionally, but they don’t want to be talked to as if they’re being emotional….

In this case, I’d bet the complainants bought into the nonsense US politicization of PPE, rather than whatever they claimed was the problem. (A Deaf person who was attempting to lip-read might have reasonable grounds for complaining about opaque facemasks, but not all facemasks.)

In BC, they mandated that you must wear the hospital provided surgical mask (or whatever it was that was similar). You weren’t allowed to bring your own n95 or better mask and they would make you remove it to enter.

      Pretty bonkers.

Even a poor fitting n95 would be better than a surgical mask with gaps everywhere

Edit: to clarify that was for visitors. .

I worked retail for years… 20+ years ago. Never heard of customers complaining about staff, and certainly not for anything petty. We would have had a laugh with the manager if that happened.

If anything, I’ve only ever heard of restaurant patrons complaining about the lack of PPE, not the use of them!

Sorry if the video is sensational. I wanted to talk about something this brought to mind.

Everyone in the video talks about wearing masks as a form of self-protection, and whether we should have a right to do that or whether our employers should be able to tell us not to do that. But I don’t wear a mask to protect myself. I wear a mask against the much larger effects it prevents in others. If it was just about me I’d probably never wear a mask unless somebody made me, and I’d resent the hell out of it. Do we have a right to protect others?

This is Quebec. In Quebec, it is illegal to fail to render aid to someone whose life requires it. Doesn’t that give people an obligation to wear a mask?

Quebec is bipolar with their laws. They have animal protection laws that consider some animals sentient (and not personal property. i.e. “pets”) but excludes other sentient animals from the same law (i.e. farmed animals, which are often the most abused)…

I think the human rights person in the video is right that wearing a mask should be protected under human right laws.

Huh, TIL… I knew you couldn’t be blamed for injuring someone while trying to help (for example, crack a rib while attempting CPR), but I did not know you absolutely had to help. I also learned that if you get injured helping someone, you can take that person to court for compensation.

By that argument we would be legally obligated to murder all bees and ban peanut butter, since some people are deadly allergic to them. We don’t want to be responsible for their death, do we?

No, but you would be legally obligated to avoid and disclose any possible cross contamination from allergens (like we already do)

Then it logically would be sufficient to disclose that you are not wearing a mask, which we already do (visually).

How so? I sincerely don’t see how it can be argued that Jane Public deciding not to wear a mask these days could be construed as “not rendering aid”. It’s a massive stretch.

good. personal health & safety, and the well being of everyone you come in contact, is the very foundation of a working society.
