The far right is constantly warning that if you go woke, you’ll go broke. But when it comes to the new Barbie movie, they couldn’t be more wrong.
Barbie, which follows Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) as they leave Barbie Land to explore the real world, earned a whopping $162 million in its opening weekend, Variety reported Monday. This is the biggest opening weekend of the year, and the biggest opening weekend for a female director ever.
The film had already made $22.3 million at the domestic box office from Thursday previews, the biggest preview haul of the summer. It blew the previous record of $17.5 million (made by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in May) out of the water.
A Matel advert in chewing-gum-for-the-brain movie format for a mid XX century female doll with impossibly thin proportions, backed by a gigantic marketing budged, is hardly a socially progressive anything.
The best movies from an equalitarian point of view that have been coming out in the last decade often have women as “the hero” in an absolutelly natural way (i.e. people who happen to be female overcomming impossible odds) as well as way better gender balance in the casting than in the past.
Only nutters from the extremist identitarian factions (on self-defined “both sides”) are looking at this Matel advertorial using big fat bottle-bottom thick goggles of “wokeness”.
Normal people will just enjoy the movie or not, on its own merits.
“We should judge this movie on its merits as a movie and not on social values like wokeness”
Judges movie exclusively on levels of social values like wokeness and corporatism without once mentioning a damn thing about the movie
Woke has been so overused I legit don’t even know what it’s supposed to mean any more. It’s got to the point where anything with a female main character is described as “woke” by somebody. Still, I appreciate it when people do describe things as woke, because it means I don’t have to listen to any more of the noise coming out of them.
Personally I’m just here for Margot who is consistently great in everything, and Ryan who I didn’t think I’d like but it turns out I do. Every comedy role he’s done has been absolute gold.
It means conservatives don’t like it. And the reason usually given for not liking it is because it is woke.
It’s an infinitely dumb self-referencing argument, it’s best to just ignore them until they find something else to be outraged about, and then ignore that as well.
Holy run-on-sentences batman
I really love visual metaphors ;)
