Or another similar Linux / non android based phone. Curious if these function adequately in place of an android phone for a daily driver.

No. The battery life is bad, it is slow, and the camera is comparable to a 15 year old flip phone. It is fun to play with, but both the hardware and software need to improve before I could use it as my only phone.

I got a PinePhone Pro to mess around / have fun with. I couldn’t get any phone features to work (calling/texting). It’s fun to install software on any low-power machine and see what works. But it’s a long way to go for a true Android replacement.

I use it everyday (typing this on it), but not as phone replacement. With the keyboard is a great ultra portable tiny laptop. I also have an old phone with Ubuntu Touch, that is a better candidate as android replacement.

i use a pinephone as my daily driver, it works, but the battery life can be kinda bad, and mobile data you might have to do some setup, and the functional mobile app selection is… not great. I would probably recommend like something graphene os instead if you want something smoother maybe, but if you really want to, it can be used, but i did use a nokia brick before it so…

In terms of software, linux is ready for phones already. In terms of hardware the og pp isnt xD. Sent from my dual-boot oneplus 6 running LineageOS and droidian, which previously had postmarketOS and KupferOS
