Eh, as a former Reddit mod, when the majority of comments are racism/transphobia, the easiest way to handle it is to lock the post.

Yeah, it’s kinda laziness, but when you have a life and don’t want to babysit a post for the next day… you don’t really have many options.

I guess one option could be don’t make a commitment you don’t have time to fulfill.

Let the voting system do its job of crowdsourcing the suppression of unhelpful content.

When I was on reddit it was just a fact that there’d be a pile of trash accumulated at the bottom of each thread, made of comments that were stupid or toxic and collapsed because their score was negative. That layer of shit at the bottom was well-hidden and didn’t interfere with the productive discussion happening above.

The voting system to suppress content suppresses reasonable views and ends up with highly upvoted nazi shit. Not because everyone is a Nazi (arguable) but because nazis have a motivation to push an agenda.

If Nazi shit is highly upvoted, then the community is already lost.

The voting system works, for the most part. Moderation is just to get rid of the early comment bullshit, or cull the already downvoted to hell posts.

I really don’t understand when moderators burn entire comment trees or lock threads. It defeats the purpose of the whole system, and makes it look like the community can’t do its job.

The voting system only serves to push people’s biases to the top. 98% of the top-rated comments on Reddit are worse than trash because they misinform, or are a regurgitation of a commonly-accepted half-truth.

Honestly, it really sounds like you don’t understand moderation on Reddit. The admins can and will come in a couple days later, see that you didn’t handle the removal of content deemed against sitewide rules, then hold the moderation team accountable for not handling it.

Once in a while, or during a huge influx is fine. But repeated “slips” results in the admins taking action against the sub itself, and in certain cases even the mods who are ignoring the problem.

What you are assuming is the case, simply isn’t.

Yeeeeah… uh, the problem is that the community I was moderating was formerly pretty unmoderated. A loooot of racist and transphobic shit got upvoted.

“Letting the votes handle it” also doesn’t stop Reddit from seeing reports go unresolved, and action against the sub.

I get where your coming from, but you’re essentially saying “let the racism run rampant if you don’t have the time to manually review every comment on a post, you should have dedicated a few hours of your work day to this.”

Don’t get so haughty. Lemmy.world (based on the Netherlands) deletes posts and bans users that mention support for Luigi.

Earlier today I replied to a post on Lemmy.world about this problem, saw my post had many up votes and replied. But I couldn’t respond to any of them because the post had been deleted by mods.

There are two sides to the coin, just as you can chose which instances to use, they’re free to run their instance how they like, which is how it should be in my opinion. I think it’s a bit strong to call it censorship; it’s their website, their servers, and if enough people don’t like it they can just not post there. This is the same freedom we had with old-style forums, because there was no monopoly in many cases you could select a forum based on if you liked how it was run.

You’re right, they have moderation control over lemmy.world posts, but it’s still your decision to post there. If you feel that strongly about it you can even chose an instance that doesn’t federate with lemmy.world, they exist.

You’ll have to sign up for a new account, yes, but is that a big loss? I mean there’s no karma here, your existing posts and account won’t go away, it’ll just not be the main account you log into any more. I personally think it’s not a bad idea to have accounts on a few instances, I’ve moved around through several.

Murder? Such strong language. Is CEO killing really murder? If someone has so thoroughly surrendered their humanity as Brian Robert Thompson did, are they really human anymore? You can only commit murder against humans. I think of Thompson more akin to a cloth sack filled with bloody dollar bills than an actual human being. Ethically, what Luigi did is like collapsing a cardboard box or treating mold on a bathroom tile. Technically a destructive act, but hardly murder. There’s no need to use such inflammatory language to describe the disassembly of an inanimate object.

Obviously duhumanizing someone due to their race, religion, sexual characteristics, or other immutable properties is wrong. But we’re talking about someone who Damned themselves entirely through their own actions. No one took Thompson’s humanity from him; he threw it away willingly.

Make no mistake. When Thompson hit the pavement that cold morning, he did not stop falling. His soul tried to rise up to the clouds, but he could not. Looking down, his ghost found a shackle tied to his ankle. Bound in fetters to a pile of gold, an otherworldly representation of his own wealth and greed. As his spirit tried desperately to soar upwards, instead he sunk down, down, and down, the ground rising up above him like a diver beneath the surface of the ocean. And he did not stop falling until his soul reached the Pit of Hell itself.

Such is the fate of all men who take the lives of others for their greed. In the end, they all Burn.

The case sparked national debate, with some hailing Penny as a hero for attempting to subdue a man he considered a menace to public safety and others seeing him as a white vigilante who choked a Black man to death.

Some New Yorkers protested the trial outcome this week, holding signs and chanting Jordan Neely’s name in a Manhattan square.

Penny has been hailed a hero by many, but Neely’s death also divided the city as residents grapple with how to respond to mental health crises threatening public safety.

Do you people not read the shit you reference? Also, if you take this as an example and direct comparison, does that mean you think the murder of this guy was also justified? Does that mean you like the orange fascist?

                  Just ignore the outcry

                  These aren’t mutually exclusive.

Alright, I guess we just go around and murder everyone who we want to now.

Our western judicial system is helping to define a group of people for whom it is acceptable to murder and a group for whom it is not. If you want to kill a vagrant on a subway, you’re likely going to get away without serious consequences. If you kill a CEO, probably not.
